Winston Churchill wasa manic depressive (bi-polar) but obviously functional. I wouldn't categorize him as a "certified lunatic" on par with James Holmes or Jared Loughner.

He certainly wasn't faking his illness, but acknowledged it as his "black dog" (occasional depressive mood).

However, it was Winston Churchillís own illness, which he referred to as his ďblack dog,Ē that played a major role in World War II and Churchillís career development. Some suspect that it was Churchillís recurrent episodes of depression that allowed him to realistically assess the threat of Germany. Because of his depression he may have understood that simply conciliating Hitler would not stop Germany from advancing across Europe.

The great statesman's mental health, and in particular Winston Churchill's manic depression, is still generating controversy today.

Since we've drifted a bit on faking mental illness to actually being mentally ill, it's a good place to mention that one problem with mental illness isn't the illness itself, but the social stigma of having it. One reason more people don't seek treatment is because they become social pariahs if they do. It was considered a big deal Mike Wallace "came out" and admitted to having clinical depression. Since then, more prominent people have admitted to having or having had mental health problems which has helped remove some of the social stigma, but that stigma still exists as recently as with Nancy and Adam Lanza.

To the end of helping remove social stigma regarding mental illness, here are 11 prominent figures who all had mental health problems:

1. ABRAHAM LINCOLN – DEPRESSION?

The Great Emancipator managed to lead the country through one of its more trying times, despite suffering from severe depression most of his life. According to one Lincoln biographer, letters left by the president’s friends referred to him as “the most depressed person they've ever seen.” On at least one occasion, he was so overcome with “melancholy” that he collapsed. Both his mother and numerous members of his father’s family exhibited similar symptoms of severe depression, indicating he was probably biologically susceptible to the illness. Lincoln is even assumed to be the author of a poem published in 1838, "The Suicide’s Soliloquy,” which contains the lines:

Hell! What is hell to one like me
Who pleasures never knew;
By friends consigned to misery,
By hope deserted too?

Bi-polar is easily multiple depressive psychotic breaks. They don't all act like Robin Williams.

It's also a sliding scale of severity. Not all are completely sane nor completely mad.
