I know this will shock many to their foundations but there is such a thing as "both" or "somewhere in the middle." You'll find in life the truth usually lies closer to the middle as opposed to the extremes. People normally use extremes in their personal opinions and analogies because it's more sensational.

The crux of heroism is individual sacrifice to the greater good. That being said I disagree that soldiers are by default both hero and tool of war.
Beyond that your criticism of sensationalism is noted and dismissed. While there is truth to it, it isn't really a factor here.
