HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — Democrat Barack Obama says he won't just be a president for the American people, but the animals too.

"What about animal rights?" a woman shouted out during the candidate's town hall meeting outside Las Vegas Wednesday after he discussed issues that relate more to humans, like war, health care and the economy.

Obama responded that he cares about animal rights very much, "not only because I have a 9-year-old and 6-year-old who want a dog." He said he sponsored a bill to prevent horse slaughter in the Illinois state Senate and has been repeatedly endorsed by the Humane Society.

"I think how we treat our animals reflects how we treat each other," he said. "And it's very important that we have a president who is mindful of the cruelty that is perpetrated on animals."

A huge plus from me, having 3 dogs and 4 cats (all rescues). I sometimes volunteer at the shelter (except I keep adopting my fosters) and some of the deliberate cruelty I've witnessed is beyond comprehension.

I"m an animal lover, and believe Obama is correct when he says

I have a cat myself and it strikes me as ood that hardly anyone in the race has even mentioned animal rights as an issue, much less endangered species.

Possibly due to the reaction? I remember the thread I started on Paul's position got a few "Who the fuck cares?" or "you're crazy" responses.

People have gotten used to the prevailing attitude about the environment and the world. The current administration's attitude that no matter what we do, everything will be fine, even if evidence to the contrary is presented, has infiltrated society. It is sad. People would rather close their eyes and have whatever it is, be it houses or oil) and pretend that the destruction of habitat is not anything to worry about.

Yeah, who cares, not a huge issue, not something to vote for a prez over.

I think this is why Obama will win....he takes on important issues. I'm going to predict it right here (http://www.fantazsports.com).
