View Full Version : Lustful nuns cause a stir

A provocative magazine ad that shows a group of entranced Catholic nuns sketching a naked man triggered waves of outrage from members of the Catholic community yesterday.

“It is in very poor taste,” said Sister Michelle Anne, a Carmelite nun and admissions coordinator at the Marian Manor nursing home in South Boston, about an Equinox Fitness Club advertisement in the latest issue of Boston magazine.

The ad depicts heavily made-up nuns, in habits, sketching a physically fit man, shown from behind. One of the lustful-looking sisters is depicted with her habit hitched up.

“No one in our community would ever be involved with something like that,” Sister Michelle Anne said. “It’s very upsetting.”

The Catholic League, the Archdiocese of Boston and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts all blasted the ad yesterday.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue called it “patently stupid,” while C.J. Doyle of the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts said it “portrays a callous contempt for the sensibility of Catholics.”

Equinox defended the ad yesterday.

“Our ad campaigns are based on personal motivation and fantasy and throughout history the body has been considered a form of art,” Judy Taylor, a spokeswoman for Equinox Fitness Clubs, said in a written statement.

The only Equinox gym in Boston is located in the Back Bay, but the company has other gyms in major U.S. cities including New York, Chicago and San Francisco.

Donohue, whose group is the largest Catholic civil rights organization, also blasted Fallon Worldwide, the Minnesota firm that created the ad.

He pointed out that about 20 years ago, several major U.S. corporations stopped doing business with a predecessor firm - then known as Fallon McElligot - after senior officials were accused of racist and sexist behavior. The firm lost $22 million in accounts.

Boston magazine Publisher Dan Scully said the image is no more provocative than everyday images on commercial television.

“There’s nothing in there that we don’t think should be on the coffee table,” he said.

Bostonians in Catholic neighborhoods disagreed.

“Disgusting,” said Richie Davis of South Boston, referring to the ad.

“Disgraceful,” added Peggy Cosetta, another South Boston resident.

“It’s wrong,” added Isabelle Paull, a South Boston resident.

The Catholic League’s Donohue wondered why officials at the advertising firm and the fitness center thought it was OK to portray Catholic religious women in this way.

“Equinox could have asked Fallon to replace the nuns with Islamic women covered with veils,” he said. “But that was probably too edgy . . . guess there are some envelopes that no one wants to push these days.”

Is it in poor taste? Probably, so if you don't like it don't look at it. Personally I see nothing wrong with it.

I wonder if Equinox had published this bunch in the same scene, they would have gotten away with it.

Vice President - Executive Olga Vives
Vice President - Action Melody Drnach
Vice President - Membership Latifa Lyles

Probably not.
But they might all have had the same look of non-recognition.
Just a hunch...

Them's some hot nuns.

But, perhaps they were envisioning that what they were painting was a representation of Christ or God to whom they had dedicated their lives.

Hey, it's as good an answer as any for people who go for mysticism.

I see nothing wrong with the picture. There was a PBS show that featured a nun who talked about all sorts of art including naked people. I do not see the human nude as being naughty or dirty. Nothing wrong with nuns wanting to pursue art as a hobby.

Yeah, real nuns wouldn't look like fashion models.

I dunno. My aunt the nun was a pretty hot looking babe in her younger days! I wish I could have shown her the picture.

Perhaps they were admiring the asset you mention in your sig and thinking of what they could do with it.

Because, of course, man was mad in God's image and the nuns are all, figuratively, married to God.

They were just fantasizing about their husband.

Anyone that has a problem with that should address their beliefs.

Well, a good wife is available at all times to care for their husband's needs, right?[hr]BTW, I am gonna call ahead and save a place at my table in Hell for you, because you two will certainly be there.

Why? I didn't say that I want to fuck God.

Can't I have one simple discussion about fucking God without being threatened with Hell?

Not as much trouble as I was in a few minutes ago when I thought God was going to have his way with me.

On a serious note: (Is that possible in a thread of this nature?) For me, I refer to god as he because the nature of god is pursuer, sort of the male syndrome... not because of gender...

I would have assumed I would have to believe in Hell in order to be accused of threatening someone with it. ;)

OK. First I'm going to state that I have read the rest of this thread to date before posting this.

And, not being a believer, I'm not so worried about hell.

But, that's not what I'm saying. I'm not convinced that the looks are of lust but simply admiration.

That's my story, I'm sticking with it.

If sex is good, and lust is natural, wouldn't it just be natural for nuns to have the same feelings? Nothing wrong with looking as long as you don't touch. And if there really were a god, would he actually be such a prude?

I'm typically not a fan of family stories, but I think that's one I'd like to hear.

I'm assuming there's no video, right?

My apologies for making this thread serious, lust may be natural but the Bible teaches us to control it. In other words, we are rejecting the lowest part of our nature, the animal instinct that is inherently connected to materialism. By overcoming these physical impulses we learn self-discipline, which eventually allows us to cease to feel these impulses at all, at which point we have complete control, sex can more easily take on a spiritual character because it is not simply a pleasure, but the act of creation at a human level. The church is quite right to oppose people viewing sex as a lustful and indulgent act, it destroys the spirituality of a sacred act. I'm not sure the church fully understand this however.

DANG

As the story goes, God has to have a schlong... or else how did he screw Mary?
Fornicated, to be exact.... with a woman who was engaged.

The message from God is that we should have unwed sex, be fruitful and multiply. .... and then when your son is nailed to a cross, just ignore him. Because as all republicans and pseudo-christians know "Torture is Good".[hr]
My apologies for making this thread serious, lust may be natural but the Bible teaches us to control it.Actually the Bible teaches us what utter failures we are at self control. Thats what the Law and the prophets are all about. To prove to us exactly how impossible it is to be obedient.
In other words, we are rejecting the lowest part of our nature, the animal instinct that is inherently connected to materialism. By overcoming these physical impulses we learn self-discipline, which eventually allows us to cease to feel these impulses at all, at which point we have complete control, ...Thats crap. God gave us those strong irresistable urges on purpose. So, when you forbid a priest from marrying (for a legitimate release of sexual energy)... you are setting him up for abnormal secret sex, whether puritanically forbidden masturbation, or else "illicit" sex with another, possibly even with children.

...sex can more easily take on a spiritual character because it is not simply a pleasure, but the act of creation at a human level. As if there is something WRONG with pleasure? As if God is evil for making things feel and taste and smell pleasant? (edit to add: Big Dumb Sex for the sake of big dumb sex can be GREAT! ... there is also a lot to be said for the spiritual/sexual experience)

The church is quite right to oppose people viewing sex as a lustful and indulgent act, it destroys the spirituality of a sacred act. I'm not sure the church fully understand this however.Lust is good. God gave me lust. Sex is sex, God made us that way. It can be good or evil depending on circumstances. Sex among consenting adults should not be legislated by church or state.

Sex is carnal, spiritual and mental... you cant seperate any of your elements from the experience.

The flesh is not evil unless you believe it is evil... then FOR YOU it is evil. Beat yourself black and blue when see some nice boobies... I dont care. Just dont tell me I am wrong for lusting after them.
God wired me that way.
[hr]I just dont see why Zo wants sex with God.

Many creatures can do that to some extent, particularly mammals.

And man can't do it completely anyway.

Yet it seems to be the ultimate goal of religion, to completely transcend attatchment to the physical realm and ascend to pure spirituality (heaven). Christianity teaches that this can only occur after death but Buddhism, Hinduism and other eastern doctrines teach that this is achievable during life. It could even be said that the prophets were those who managed to transcend their ego so that when they spoke, their words were pure Truth, which would have no distinction from the voice of God himself.

...something to think about
