BP admits knowledge of corrosion problems
Workers had predicted 'major catastrophic event' because of cost-cutting

WASHINGTON - BP now admits that senior company officials were warned three
years ago about serious corrosion problems in the pipeline being shut down
this week.

The warnings were laid out in correspondence obtained by NBC News, between
Chuck Hamel, an advocate for oil workers, and senior BP officials.

Hamel writes that BP workers had come to him predicting a "major
catastrophic event" and warning that "cost cutting" had caused "serious
corrosion damage to flow lines and systems."

Record profits and this could have been avoided if they just would have put something in the pipeline?

its all about maximising profit. mabye rounding up all the BP executives and having them don the shit suits and fixing this will teach them.

Can anyone think of a more appropriate tar and feathering?

Can anyone think of a more appropriate tar and feathering?

Well, since the problems will almost certainly be used to justify higher prices at the pump, leading to even larger profits - bonuses for everyone! (Everyone referring only to the executives, of course, not the worthless bastards who will have to do the actual work of fixing the problem. They can be downsized. Woohoo, more bonuses all around!)

This is what I don't understand. Every week there is another reason that gas prices go up.......and we keep falling for it!

Gas in 2000, was about $2.00. Can anyone tell me what other product has gone up that high? Also, this year after a long hard winter of record high heating costs, gas prices didn't even wait until the usual Memorial Day weekend to go up. It started in April!

BP was punished back in 1979 for price gouging during the second oil "crisis"; seems they haven't learned their lesson. I just wish that our legislators would develop some character and intestinal fortitude, and start hammering these companies in their profit margin with the proviso that the penalties will NOT be passed on to the consumers. That's the only way you will be able to get their attention.

If I'm not mistaken, the Senator in Alaska is trying to make BP pay for the losses it will cause the state.

I agree with you gunny.......the only way they are going to learn, is to pay through the nose. Make an example of one company and the rest just might learn. I mean, this is ridiculous. What makes it even worse, is they knew about it............but then if I'm also not mistaken, Alaska is still waiting for money from Exxon.

the only way they are going to learn, is to pay through the nose And they will pass that cost on to us. I just wish that our legislators would develop some character and intestinal fortitude, and start hammering these companies in their profit margin with the proviso that the penalties will NOT be passed on to the consumers. That's the only way you will be able to get their attention. Noooooooo, the only way to get their attention is to stop buying gas. People seem to be unwilling to do so. I have cut down my gas consumption considerably, but one person makes no difference. Demand dropped sharply after the "oil crisis" which caused gas prices to drop dramatically. Current demand has not dropped as of yet. Every week there is another reason that gas prices go up.......and we keep falling for it!
Every week the energy traders have another excuse to artificially inflate the price of gasoline futures, and we allow it to continue. The powers that be are vested in those oil futures and like things the way they are. Again, the only thing that will gain their attention, aside from rioting in the streets, is a sharp drop in demand for gasoline, which apparently isn't going to happen any time soon.
