This is a very interesting article. It makes me think I might start restricting with whom I will debate anything. Also considering this article, and the response to my speech August 4 at the Cicero Society meeting, I don't think it was a good idea for me to attempt to increase knowledge of Cicero with these older folks. They have no interest in hearing anything that doesn't agree with what they believe. We are capable of reason, but there are biological reasons why we are not as reasonable we want to believe we are.

How the Brain Helps Partisans Admit No Gray Washington Post (7/31/06)

People who see the world in black and white rarely seem to take in information that could undermine their positions.

Yawn....

Very few people take in knowledge which disrupts their worldview. Everyone has filters. I'm sure you do too.

Did you read the article?Â*Â*Reaserchers observed the brain function of dividuals.Â*Â*Specific areas of the brain related to feeling good or bad and making judgements, become active when a person has to make a decision.Â*Â*This explains why we are not as rational as we would like to believe we are.Â*Â*I think it is good that we are aware of this, and I do not appreciate you discouraging others from getting this information with your yawn.Â*Â*Effectively saying it is boring information.Â*Â*

I highly value self awareness, not only for myself but also for people I must share decisions with.Â*Â*Those who criticize "tree huggers", or insist we have all the oil we need,Â*Â*need to know they are blocking out important information that makes them feel uncomfortable.Â*Â*Bush does this a lot!Â*Â*He is a very dangerous man to have for President.Â*Â*Perhaps if we knew more about how our brains function and what makes Bush such a dangerous man for leading our nation, we might not have voted him into office.Â*Â*God, can not undo the damage he has done.Â*Â*So, yes, I do wish others be aware of how our brains work.Â*Â*Thank you

Imagine knowing as much about how our brains work, as we know about the personality of God and His will.Â*Â* What study do you think would be the most helpful to humanity?

Jeez..talk about being ironic. You blaze the guy for basically agreeing with the article and your post. You just want everyone to agree with you. And I think everyone wants that. You seem very intolerant of others opinions though when they differ.

Athena, no kidding and no offense intended, but can you see how your statement falls right in line with your preconceived notions? Your opinions of Bush haven't changed a bit and you just applied the thesis of the article to Bush, while assuming that your ideas are, of course correct! I hope that you realize that GW Bush has to my knowledge never refered to environmentalists as "tree huggers" and being a oilman, I imagine he knows far more about the world's oil supply than you or I. Could these be ingrained assumptions that you are unable to change?

Because the people knew what makes John Kerry such a dangerous man for leading our country, we voted to elect Bush. Now God won't have to undo the damage he would have certainly done. That IS how our brains work.

I'm not trying to ridicule your post Athena. I'm merely pointing out how you are behaving exactly as the article predicts. Actually, in my mind the information the article provides is interesting, but basically useless. Unless of course your self awareness is superior to my self awareness.

I will no longer respond to post that do not address the issue of the original post. I am fed up with all the talk that has nothing to do with the subject that is the reason for threads.

They have no interest in hearing anything that doesn't agree with what they believe.

It's part of their identity. That's the nature of democratic politics.
