Like many of the other GOP presidential candidates, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani had tried to portray himself as tough on undocumented immigration. One of his favorite applause lines has been to stress English-only policies:

The final end result about becoming a citizen — you should be able to have to read English, write English, and speak English if you want to become a citizen.

Nevertheless, Giuliani wants the votes of Floridians who speak Spanish. Today, he has released a new campaign ad en español to air on at least three Spanish-language television stations in Miami. At the end of the ad — called Liderazgo (Leadership) — Giuliani says, “Soy Rudy Giuliani y apruebo este mensaje (I’m Rudy Giuliani and I approved this message).” Watch it:

Last fall, the owner of Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant Geno’s Steaks endorsed Giuliani. Vento became notorious for posting a sign in his restaurant that read: “This is America. When Ordering Please Speak English.” He also once told a reporter that Mexicans carry disease into the United States because they “play and drink out of the same water.”

Giuliani wholeheartedly embraced Vento’s endorsement, posting it on the campaign’s official YouTube site. Giuliani also personally went to Philadelphia and embraced Vento. “Whenever I’m at Geno’s, I order in English,” he told a reporter.

Will Vento post a similar sign for Giuliani? “This is America. When Campaigning, Please Speak English.”

Off Topic: The spanish tranlsation should be "Por favor hable ingles".
On Topic: While I agree that there is a minimum of the English language that should be learned, prior to citizenship, it is not necessary to learn the language completely. Even though my parents were imigrants to this country, they spoke enough to get by. They admit that it is important to speak the language in order to facilitate contributing to this great country of ours. It's difficult to avoid being exploited when you don't have the tools, like the language, to fight back. Learning the language strongly helps making a viable contribution to the collective.
In my humble opinion, without wanting to start a prolonged battle her, I believe that it is not hypocritical of Giuliani to require non-speaking people to learn to speak English, while at the same time address them in Spanish in his ads. It encourages cross cultural diversity, and gets the message out to those that can't understand the language. My kids watch "Dora The Explorer" which speaks in both English and Spanish. Should that cartoon have subtitles for those who can't understand one of the two languages? Should the Thai speaking or Hebrew speaking child living in america have the opportunity to watch a movie like "The Lion King" in their native tongue? I think so.
Maybe the solution would be to have all candidates, as well as all movies, commercials, cartoons, and books available in ALL languages in order to make everyone happy. Reality is the almighty profit: It would not be cost effective. When all is said and done, it boils down to getting the votes, Democrat and Republican alike.

Well I can't speak spanish, and google translation and altavista gave me two different translations, but when I translated it back into english this is the one that still said the same thing. Neither translator gave me "Por favor hable ingles" though.

My apologies. The correction was only meant to educate, not to berate. And as you know, sometimes searh engines can be inaccurate while at other times search engines can be right on the money. To be accurate, I should have included an accent over the letter "E" in inglés...my oversight. The line in this next reference states “Esta es América: Cuando ordene, por favor hable inglés”. The literal translation is: "This is America: When you order, please speak English. You can find it and verify, if you like, in a great source which is an actual spanish publication. Trust me on this one.

Just thought I'd add that in some places, just the opposite of English being a mandatory language nationally is being considered locally. Leander, Texas school is considering making Spanish a core subject and requirement for it's students. Check out this article

It takes a spark to light a fire, no matter what language you speak. Maybe adds a bit of perspective to Giuliani's words.

Por favor hablas ingles, As far as the topic you guys are talking about I'm from the Miami area and parents are cuban exiles and we agree on immigrants speaking enlgish but we are voting for either Guiliani or Mccain because of his hard stance against the cuban regime that is why. I heard one of my uncle's tell me he saw Mccain at the local cuban restaurant named Versailles and he said he was a gentlemen.
