View Full Version : How to annoy an SUV owner...

A few years ago, one of my colleagues bought a new SUV to replace her pickup. Several people in the office commented on it, and when I saw her, I complimented her on her new station wagon. For some reason, she was royally pissed off. Since then, I've made a point of referring to SUVs as station wagons, and it seems to work. :madlaugh:

Actually, republicans have a similar little dirty trick when they refer to the democratic party as the "democrat" party. They do it only to annoy us. Since the vast majority of SUV owners are republicans, I will continue my little campaign to undermine their self-confidence and manhood.

Damn. I knew I liked you for a reason.

What's wrong with a station wagon? My Subaru Forester is a station wagon type with all-wheel-drive. It's perfect for us and our needs!
Oh, and the dog likes it too.
I used to drive a Monte Carlo and those are fine, as long as you like sitting on the exhaust system, folding yourself up like an accordion to sit in the back seat (an afterthought), getting crappy gas mileage, killing your back digging stuff out of the trunk, and having every little goon teenager in a Honda pull up to you at red lights and want to race.
No, thanks. I love my station wagon. I don't give a poo what anyone wants to call it. And no, my husband certainly finds driving it no insult to his manhood whatsoever when he drives it LOL!

Well, there did seem to be a bunch of conservatives who think small, fuel efficient cars are unmanly. I got a few comments on that from my civic.

Maybe, but the "ignorance is bliss" kind of jealousy. Doing what's environmentally better often means choosing things you like less but are cleaner.

Funny...especially since the "democratic" party website is at DEMOCRATS.org. Is it possible Buck that you are completely wrong?

Here is more from the official site.

The ultimate goal? An active, effective group of Democrats organized in every single precinct in the country.

http://democrats.org/a/party/a_50_state_strategy/

The word "democrats" is used over 70 times on that page. Yes I actually counted them. Your outlandish comment that Republicans call Democrats to "annoy" is complete falsehood. I have no idea where you got this perception from. Maybe the same place where you believed you were a Republican when you joined this site. You can't just make stuff up here...we have members that actually do fact checking.

FACT: If you are a member of the Democratic Party you are a DEMOCRAT.

Complain to the DNC if you have problem with that.

democrats is used by many members of the democratic party. It's usually not offensive. But many conservatives use that spelling due to the RATS ending. So it is often used as a derogatory alternative to democratic party.

You missed that whole comment being a jab didn't you Zo? :) Especially in light of what Buck said about the vast majority of owners of SUVs being republicans.

So calling someone what they are is the same as calling their vehicle something it's not?

My, you have an amazing grasp of the obvious, Labrocca! Of course I'm a democrat. And I belong to the democratic party. "Democrat party" appeared about thirty or so years ago, too long for you to remember, but if I recall properly, the term was the creation of one of the republican party's dirty tricksters. I can't recall his name, but I think it was the guy who died of brain cancer.

So no, it's not a "complete falsehood." Furthermore, I can't believe you're still bringing up that old canard about how I claimed to be a republican. You set up the registration process with "republican" as the default choice. I just let it be because it was kinda fun. As things stand now, I change my "affiliation" whenever it suits my fancy, just as I spin my avatar for the hell of it.

Maybe you need to get a life, Jesse![hr]

Hey, I have no objection to station wagons. We've had 'em since about 1963, and have owned minivans since 1990 or so because we have a good-sized family. I have no objection whatever to people driving the kind of vehicle they think they need. But I also think I have a perfect right to poke some fun at people who think big cars make them more important or more worthy.

I just get a kick out of how so many people get all twisted out of shape on this issue. Look at how Jesse is getting all hot and bothered about "democrat party." He doesn't even understand that democrats belong to the "democratic party." By the way, it was Lee Atwater who created the "democrat party" label. That just popped up from my memory stack. Now, please pardon me while I go change my own party affiliation to something else. :lmao:

I do need to get a life. :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democrat_Party_(phrase)

And seems there are still things I don't know. btw...it looks as if the term was used way before 30 years ago.

Also interesting to note the "grammar" section.

Issues of grammar

Some believe that the use of the noun "Democrat" as an adjective is ungrammatical on the grounds that "Democratic Party" is not a proper noun, but a noun modified by an adjective.[17] Using a noun as a modifier of another noun is not, strictly speaking, grammatically incorrect in modern English in the formation of a compound noun, i.e. "shoe store," "school bus," "peace movement," "Senate election," etc. Americans commonly speak of "the Iraq war" rather than "the Iraqi war."[18][19]

The use of "Democrat Party" could be part of a linguistic trend. As one linguist explained, "We're losing our inflections – the special endings we use to distinguish between adjectives and nouns, for instance. There's a tendency to modify a noun with another noun rather than an adjective. Some may speak of "the Ukraine election" rather than 'the Ukrainian election' or 'the election in Ukraine,' for instance. It's 'the Iraq war' rather than 'the Iraqi war,' to give another example."[18]

I have never attempted to use Democrats Party. Oddly Democrats do refer to themselves as Democrats so I don't personally see the negative placed on the word Democrats. Even given the RATS part it's still imho a big stretch.

Lab the negative comes from Rush Limbaugh's use of the terminology "democrat party" when speaking of the Democrats, or at least that is the way that I understand it.

Seems like a small thing about which to get huffy, but I don't use it simply because it definitely does get our Democrat friends dander up.

I still think you don't get it, Jesse. A person is a democrat, but he belongs to a party officially known as the democratic party. Am I gonna have to carve that on yer belly to get you to understand? And see above--Lee Atwater coined the term "democrat party" in an intentional attempt to spread FUD.

It's the difference between a noun (a person, place or thing) which is "Democrat"
versus
an adjective which describes/modifies a noun which is "Democratic."

Therefore, using a noun (Democrat) to modify a noun (party) is gramatically incorrect. It has to be an adjective (Democratic) before it is correct but Lee Atwater never struck me as a particularly educated man to begin with.

Want to REALLY piss off an SUV owner?
Put a bumper sticker on his SUV that says "Real Men Drive Yugos."
I've been looking for one of those for one particularly obnoxious SUV driver on my block, because I told him I'd do that if he insisted on parking in front of the damn hydrant.
Purrs,
Pookie

Well, if any of these liberal types saw what I drive, they would probably go completely batsh1t.

http://photos6.ebizautos.com/6396/2190065_1_107.jpg

Especially if they found out I have over 120,000 miles on it in 7.5 years. (That one's not actually mine, mine is exactly like that, though)

But, if they see what my wife drives, and what I REALLY like to drive, maybe they would cut me a little slack.

(Again, not my wife's but really close. We've customized her's a bit, for example, the bumpers are painted black to match the top.)

(OK. I'll throw a little bone to the libs ...
