The Pope has ordered his bishops to set up exorcism squads to tackle the rise of Satanism.

Vatican chiefs are concerned at what they see as an increased interest in the occult.

They have introduced courses for priests to combat what they call the most extreme form of "Godlessness."

Each bishop is to be told to have in his diocese a number of priests trained to fight demonic possession.

The initiative was revealed by 82-year-old Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican "exorcistinchief," to the online Catholic news service Petrus.

"Thanks be to God, we have a Pope who has decided to fight the Devil head-on," he said.

"Too many bishops are not taking this seriously and are not delegating their priests in the fight against the Devil. You have to hunt high and low for a properly trained exorcist.

"Thankfully, Benedict XVI believes in the existence and danger of evil - going back to the time he was in charge of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith." The CDF is the oldest Vatican department and was headed by Benedict from 1982, when he was Cardinal Ratzinger, until he became Pope in 2005.

Father Amorth said that during his time at the department Benedict had not lost the chance to warn humanity of the risk from the Devil.

He said the Pope wants to restore a prayer seen as protection against evil that was traditionally recited at the end of Catholic Masses. The prayer, to St Michael the Archangel, was dropped in the 1960s by Pope John XXIII.

"The prayer is useful not only for priests but also for lay people in helping to fight demons," he said.

Father Paolo Scarafoni, who lectures on the Vatican's exorcism course, said interest in Satanism and the occult has grown as people lost faith with the church.

He added: "People suffer and think that turning to the Devil can help solve their problems. We are being bombarded by requests for exorcisms."

The Vatican is particularly concerned that young people are being exposed to the influence of Satanic sects through rock music and the Internet.

In theory, under the Catholic Church's Canon Law 1172, all priests can perform exorcisms. But in reality only a select few are assigned the task.

Under the law, practitioners must have "piety, knowledge, prudence, and integrity of life."

The rite of exorcism involves a series of gestures and prayers to invoke the power of God and stop the "demon" influencing its victim.

I think Satanism (religious Satanism, not the type kids practice by shouting "look at me I'm evil" while killing animals) is beneficial to some people, just as Wicca, Christianity, Islam etc. is beneficial to the right person. Though I can't help but laugh at hearing about the return of exorcisms. True, they never fully disappeared, but the last pope wasn't exactly a staunch supporter of widespread exorcisms.

They want the "priests" to quit piddling their kids.

May his sin be exposed.

A local priest near here, raped a little girl at gunpoint.

The current pope gave him a job as a priest in Mexico.... while the perv was convicted here in California.... waiting sentencing.

If we are going to have platoons of exorcists running all over the place, chasing demons.....how long will it be before the Salen Witch trials start up again and we have people being accused of witchery by by people who have no clue what they are talking about?
When you start in against something you cannot prove exists or does not exist, you are opening the door to all kinds of abuse and terrorism. This is the sort of thing that makes it imperative what we guard against theocratic rule. It would be a calamity if suddenly itinerant preachers with marginal education, maybe even with snakes in a basket were calling the shots everyway you turned.

Let's not derail the topic talking about pedophiles. I'm glad the Catholic Church is there to deal with this. Call me crazy, I don't care, but I believe that Satanism in it's true form does exist and there are occasions where an exorcism is needed.

I lived in a house once that could have use a well-trained Catholic priest! And I met people before who had been through Satanic rituals and seemed infested, whether it was true or in their minds they needed help with it.

I've also heard about covens of Satanists who commit unspeakable crimes. However, I do not have any independent sources for this - could be just a tall tale people told me :-).

Well Mia, I have talked with many Catholic priests on the subject in the course of my work and I have almost universally received the same reactions......they scoff at the devil, satan and demons, they believe exorcism is a dangerous thing especially when the exorcist does know what he is doing and not one priest looked forward to that kind of training. Its something that came out of the middle ages and they believe thats where it should stay. I tend to agree with them fully.

Well I spend much of the week in Salem, a city that, if the pope had his way, he'd put into lock down until he could exorcise every corner of it. Considering the rise in Occult religions is part of the reason, it just turns it into one big joke.

And the people of Salem would stand for that? Even those who are not Catholic?

OK, well this is not an area I have any knowledge in, so I will bow out :-)

Exorcisms, that's something the Vatican puts out, I wouldn't believe the Vatican at all on anything they say, and I use to be Catholic but none of it made sense too me and it went directly against the Bible. Just my opinion, not judging anyone.

You're kidding, right?

I'm waiting for the day when he decides he's going to take on Freemasons.

The Pope is trying to go Conservative to fast. I believe that he, along with many conservatives, are in for a shock as the future unfolds.
