The chance that a rogue mini-world — asteroid 2007 WD5 — will smack into Mars on January 30th has increased from 1.3 percent to 3.9 percent (http://www.livescience.com/blogs/author/leonarddavid)
This will pose no danger to earth, but it will be super cool to watch. Astronomers and physicists are really excited. A 3.9% chance is really really high when you're talking about astronomy.

The spirit rover has a wonky wheel. It would be a really cool way for it to be retired if it could send back a few last pics of the shockwave before it was obliterated. :)

The tea leaf readers over at NASA say it's unlikely that either rover will be able to see the "landing" and definite that they would be unharmed by it. But I agree with you it would be a great joke in NASA meetings for the next decade or so as to whether a particular rover is "asteroid proof".

They also claim that there is nothing of interest on Mars or the moon, yet they hand out 'smudged' photos all the time. ;)
