After the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, the federal government launched or intensified investigations into the funding of terrorist activities by organizations raising money in the United States.Â*Â*In the course of those investigations, the government developed a plan to freeze the assets and/or search the premises of two foundations.Â*Â*Two New York Times reporters learned of these plans, and, on the eve of each of the government’s actions, called each foundation for comment on the upcoming government freeze and/or searches.

I have to admit, I'm on the fence about this one. I'm thrilled that the government is now going after it's ace #1 leaker Miller, now that they no longer need her. Didn't read far enough into the 33 pages to see just how they got around the wiretapping to get their supeonas, though. Maybe tomorrow......as I said, I'm giddy. A two-fer.

Might just make me right.........I figured it would all come out, sooner or later that this administration was tapping news sources, what next? The Democrats, themselves?

Great catch, by the way! I haven't seen this on any other forum.

Ummm, I don't get where you find tapping of the media. Care to expound?

You might want to read further into this one. The suit is over a request for phone records after the NYT tipped off terrorist proxies *before* they were to be raided.

I think you might be a bit too giddy on this one. :)

As I said on the other thread.......I'm pooped. Had my grand son and friends for a couple of days. I didn't get past page 4, before words were blending. So I'll just state what I understand, from what I've read.

Now I know that the right hates the hates the NYT, but there was a time when Miller was their darling......when she was leaking what they wanted leaked. You say the suit is over a request for phone records. What I've read so far, the request was denied........then how do they know, unless they searched the records after being denied?

I'll probably be eating my words tomorrow after I've read the entire paper, but so far..........sounds like they did exactly what they wanted.

Hi Lily, as of August 1st, the NYT has to cough up the requested phone records.

Thanks for the link boogy..........now I can read the 33 pages at my leisure.

Hi Lily, as of August 1st, the NYT has to cough up the requested phone records.
The big difference is, the government had to go to court and demand them. I would have imagined a warrant would have been a lot easier....but hey......that's before the shit hit the fan.

I saw Fitzgerald's name in the court records and wondered why. After reading the article, I see that he is still not done with his investigation.:D

Let me ask you a question. I don't see it as hyjacking the thread, since we are the only two discussing this topic, unless I can get Cocky interested in this, since we do have a "history" on this subject.

Leaving the NYT out of the discussion, because I know how much the right hates them.......even though The Wall Street Journal AND The Washington Post also ran the same banking article. Can you honestly think that wiretaping is only being used on "the bad guys"? You don't think for one minute that this administration would also use it on reporters (as we now see), or the Democrats?

Umm, Lily, did you read the same stuff I read? I think you must be reading something into this as the info I posted has absolutely nothing to do with tapping reporters or democrats.

The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal didn't call the terrorist supporting organizations *BEFORE* they were to be raided as the New York Times did, and in so doing tip them off.

Ok, last reply, until I buckle down and read the original article. From what I understand, reading the 4 pages that I did, plus the article you posted, the only way they knew Miller tipped off the terrorists is because they had her phone records, which they finally got by going to two or three different courts.......when all they had to do was get 1 little warrent.

As for my reference to reporters and Democrats being bugged....that as I said, was totally off topic......I wanted your opinion. Do you think this administration would not wiretap any reporter or Democrat?

Ok.....tell me if I have this wrong.

Miller, this administrations favorite leaker, until she got caught and some other guy, I never heard of, tipped off some fake charity group.

The Times, doing their job, protecting their sources, refused to give up their phone records.

The Times phone company said the government trumps the Times, so they said sure.

The Times still said no and now the government is suing for the records. Just to find out who Miller's sorce was?

Don't get me wrong........Miller is useless, but I strongly believe in the freedom of the press and if reporters are forced to give their source's names, then all we'd read in the paper is what the government allows.
