It really is and it will save them on paying taxes which if they had to pay we would have to raise our costs on drilling for Oil and Gas which includes Production Costs and higher prices at the pump which is not a bad thing for Domestic Oil and Gas Distributers and privately owned Drilling Companies as well as the Major Petroleum Industry leaders. I think its great for states that rely on Oil and Gas revenue like Louisiana. Ethanol Production will also make refineries have to convert to process it and since there is no pipelines to transport it you will see cost of fuel increases across the nation since it will have to be transported by rail, truck and ships. It passed 86-8. The Democrats were a big help. Here is the link.

This is not enough to save the planet.
Why stop at 35 mpg? why not 70mpg?
Why only 65 bill gal ethanol? Why can't we replace all of our petrol with ethanol?
Congress is obviously in the pocket of Exxon and are complicit in the destruction of the planet.

Preserva you do see that it's the Republican congress at fault here don't you? The Dems had to change the bill so they wouldn't fillibuster it again.

KDKDK's post is interesting. I wouldn't have thought anyone would actually be in favor of subsidizing the oil companies who are making record profits off the high price of oil, unless they were actually a CEO of the oil company.

KDKDK why do you favor welfare for the billionaires?

Do you favor welfare for the poor and starving too?

I think it's great that government is imposing government mandates on the kind of cars companies should make regardless if they'll actually sell or not. I mean that's just super. In fact, let's apply it just to American manufacturers. After all we don't want to be accused of being economic imperialists now. Yep, GM, Ford, Chrysler? Forget they lost 10's of billions of dollars in the past few years. Please, let's make them less competitive in the domestic market. Fantastic idea, 35 MPG baby! We have achieved environmental automotive bliss! Woot! Oh wait, there's now 3,000,000 unemployed people? GM went under? Thousands of suppliers have gone belly up? Oh well, we have 35 MPG cars now!

I believe it's fantastic that instead of drilling for oil in areas where we know where oil is we'd rather drive up the price of food here and around the world by turning our food supplies into ethanol. Fantastic use of the most fertile land on the face of the earth and every politician loves it. What better way to ensure government slavery than to make food more expensive? What could possibly create an even more corrupt Congress? Them stumping that only they can do anything about fuel and food prices.

By all means lets turn our entire food supply into fuel in the name of saving the planet. It's a fantastic idea.

Save the planet, screw the people! Government economic planning FTW.

You've got it all backwards. The reason the US car companies are going under is because they insist on making low MPG cars. The reason Honda and Toyota are reaping huge profits are because they are making high MPG cars.

If US car companies want to compete, their going to have to shrug off the oil company's handcuffs and make cars that people want to buy!

Yep, we should just ban cars and put you all into the public transportation systems.
