They get their money from sponsers. Sponsers pay probably a set fee or a per hit amount. Nothing has to do with the game.

I would really like to see their figures for the percentage of the money they take in that actually goes to sending rice to someone.

But I'm a cynic. So enjoy your game. I did look at the site, they at least get the hit.

I don't see anything wrong with it. I think they do this through sponsors who tally up the hits, but that's okay too.

What they do is take the money generated from each page view using Google Adsense and contribute that towards the charity. I'm guessing it equals out to more than the cost of 20 grains of rice per view though. Simple idea. I could figure out the math if you'd like.]

To quote their FAQ page(because I'm always too lazy to read those first):
FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 20 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.

I quit when I started running into repeat words. I guess all that language study did some good.
