Well, we've got it, and it works pretty well. And I like the First Amendment a whole lot.

Define secularism...

Did you want the nation to have a theocratic government?

Would you want an "established church?"

What we don't want is the church laying down the law, but relaying spiritual knowledge to the people. Leadership is the place of regality, which should be spiritual, but the idea of the church ruling a nation is absurd.

Secularism, in one sense, asserts the freedom of religion, and freedom from the government imposition of religion upon the people, within a state that is neutral on matters of belief, and gives no state privileges or subsidies to religions. (See also Separation of church and state and Laïcité.)

Secularism, in another sense, refers to a belief that human activities and decisions, especially political ones, should be based on what it considers to be evidence and fact rather than religious influence. Where religious based doctrines directly refer to absolute truth or divine law, secular law is based upon reasonableness which was developed during the age of enlightenment. Secularists believe that all activities falling outside of the private sphere should be secular, i.e. not religious (See also public reason).

Agreed.

Religion should always be a personal matter, and never policy. The Founders wanted to protect religious freedom, yet understood that tyrants have often used religion to control and dominate the masses. They were fanatics about avoiding the pit-falls of the application of power.

Even thought America is "secular" in Government, polls show that a large majority of citizens believe in "God" or a "Supreme Being". Depending on the poll and the time it was taken, I've seen anywhere from 88% to 96%.

I think that the government should consult with the church before they make decisions, at least they should in a situation where the church actually had a semblance of a spiritual basis. Anyone who listens to anything that comes out of a modern christian church is seriously deluded. They have forgotten what it really means to be religious.
