Chavez to U.S.: 'Go to Hell, Gringos!'

Jan 21 09:46 PM US/Eastern
By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - President Hugo Chavez told U.S. officials to "Go to hell, gringos!" and called Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice "missy" on his weekly radio and TV show Sunday, lashing out at Washington for what he called unacceptable meddling in Venezuelan affairs.
The tirade came after Washington raised concerns about a measure to grant the fiery leftist leader broad lawmaking powers. The National Assembly, which is controlled by the president's political allies, is expected to give final approval this week to what it calls the "enabling law," which would give Chavez the authority to pass a series of laws by decree during an 18-month period.

On Friday, U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Chavez's plans under the law "have caused us some concern."

Chavez rejected Casey's statement in his broadcast, saying: "Go to hell, gringos! Go home!"

He also attacked U.S. actions in the Middle East.

"What does the empire want? Condoleezza said it. How are you? You've forgotten me, missy ... Condoleezza said it clearly, it's about creating a new geopolitical" map in the Middle East, Chavez said.

In typical style, Chavez spoke for hours Sunday during his first appearance on the weekly program in five months. He sent his best wishes to the ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro, his close ally and friend who has been sidelined since intestinal surgery last summer.

Other comments ranged from watching dancing Brazilian girls wearing string bikinis at a recent presidential summit to Washington's alleged role in the hanging of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

"They took out Saddam Hussein and they hung him, for good or worse. It's not up to me to judge any government, but that gentleman was the president of that country."

Holding up a newspaper with a photograph of him gazing at a string bikini-clad Brazilian dancing samba during a summit last week in Rio de Janeiro, Chavez laughed and said: "I didn't know where to look ... It was truly a thing of beauty."

Chavez, who was re-elected by a wide margin last month, has said he will enact sweeping reforms to remake Venezuela into a socialist state. Among his plans are nationalizing the main telecommunications company and the electricity and natural gas sectors.

The president's opponents accuse him of using his political strength to expand his powers.

Relations between Caracas and Washington have been tense since Chavez was briefly ousted in a 2002 coup that he claimed the U.S. played a role in. The Bush administration has repeatedly denied being involved, although it recognized an interim government established by coup leaders.

Since then, Chavez has consistently accused the U.S. of conspiring to oust him and often asserts the CIA is working to destabilize his government. U.S. officials have denied trying to overthrow Chavez, but they have labeled him a threat to democracy.

Criticizing excessive consumption and self-indulgence, Chavez also announced plans in his broadcast to raise domestic gasoline prices and approve a new tax on luxury goods such as private yachts, second homes and extravagant automobiles.

He did not give details on the gas price hike, which he said would not affect bus drivers who provide public transportation, or the luxury tax. He said revenue from the new measures would be put toward government social programs.

Venezuela is one of the world's leading petroleum exporters and gasoline now costs as little as 12 cents a gallon due to government subsidies. Is there anyone out there who still thinks that this guy is not a socialist, and that he is denying human rights, freedoms and democracy?
Anyone?

Btw, how do you feminists like him calling a powerful woman such as Dr. Rice, "missy"? Or doesn't that not bother you because she happens to be part of the Bush administration?

Probably didn't bother you when she was called Aunt Jemimah by the left for the same reason either.
Or am I wrong?

No real surprise here for me that Chavez is not only a tyrant, but a sexist and racist one as well.

I understand the sense you have from the picture in your profile that you dislike Bush but the difference between comparing Bush and Chavez are that he wants a dictatorship and has the laws to do it where as Bush would have to go through hell and high water for that and it won't happend. The Patriot act is nothing compared to what this potty mouth Dictator is doing with his congress. That is why the people of Venezuela must vote NO for the changes Chavez wants.

So tell me Pres, are you for the U.S. severing ties with Saudi Arabia? Or are you just putting on a front because you don't like Chavez and you want to seem big and bad.

When you want to actually protest ALL countries that have tyrants (including those that the U.S. considers Allies), then maybe you will hold some credit.

But Right now your conservative buddies in Congress (The ones you support) show alliance to Saudi Arabia (which are known tyrants).

Such is the conservative way.

Chavez is right. We will not go to war on the South American Continent, but for some reason war is validated in the Middle East.

No surprise there. Chavez has always had a big mouth anyway. I'm waiting to see what will happen on Sunday, and if he doesn't get what he wants, I want to see if he'll carry through with those threats.
Poor CNN. They're going to go nuts not being able to poke their noses in there.
Purrs,

I here now that Chavez is threatening to cut off all oil to the US if we "meddle" in the referendum tomorrow.
As I understand, this vote will give Hugo the "leader for life" title in Venezuela.
This should be a fair and open vote...*sarcastically roll eyes*
I'll post a link, if anyone cares.

Why not?...
I thought US has the best army in the world. (It's according to Bush...)

Dec,
America doesn't go to war just because it can...that is a stark difference between the US and other superpowers in human history and it is a testament to our greatness and goodness.

If your conceptions were true about America, we would have turned the mid-east, Asia, and South-America into glass and acquire all their oil. We don't, why not?

If we wanted to take over the world, steal oil and imperialism the globe, we probably could. We don't, why not?
Maybe we're just stupid.

My guess is that if you had that capability, you would take advantage of it and act on it in a heart beat. We don't. Why not?

Actually, this is what the today's USA does. The US wants to get all oil there is.
So my point is that IF the USA has the best army in the world than why not go to Venezuela and kick their ass?

By the way, preservanation, nobody is asking American people about things like war or taxes obviously... and nobody ever did, so when you said "we wanted", were you speaking on behalf of the American government?

The US, not imperialistic? Are you blind?

Of course they can't simply declare war on the world, that would be suicide, even for America, but they are gradually spreading their ideology through the entire world. Democracy must always find a scapegoat whenever something goes wrong, because there is no leader to take responsibility, and democracy is seen as a moral absolute. For this reason the evil is everyone who opposes democracy, America justifies a failure of a political system by spreading it across the globe, starting in the middle-east.

How is freedom and democracy a bad thing?
People in Darfur and Sudan would gladly trade their horrible circumstances for some of what we have.
Maybe you don't think brown skinned people are capable of governing themselves or maybe they're just too stupid?
That's the way the libs look at minorities here in America, so I think this is probably the case with the rest of of the world as well.

These are the same people that think Iraqis were better off under Saddam

From what I understand, he threw in a 35 hour work week with a promise to pay for a 40, which is making some people vote for it.[hr]
