This friday Oprah will do a show on what it is like to live on $5 an hours.
I hope people watch it and come back with a comment.

Only lazy, worthless people don't earn more money. Anyone not making enough should just get another job and make more. Let the losers starve.

(just figured I'd save other posters some time)

I am usually favorably impressed by what you say, but not this time.Â*Â*Like we can really afford to pay everyone $40,000 a year for all the work we need we done?Â*Â*Get real.Â*Â*Even if the lowest wage wereÂ*Â*$40,000 a year, the cost of everything would increase to that level so the poor remained poor.Â*Â*Your complete disrepect are honest working people fills my gut with hate.Â*Â*Up to this point you were the main reason I continued to return to these forums, but you didn't think this lousey opinion through very well.Â*Â*I don't care how much money you have.Â*Â*In my opinion you are of little value to humanity unless you rethink your opinion about good, hard working people who deserve far more than you are giving.

Wherever you work, I hope you have to do the janitorial services, because you are so ungrateful to those who provide you service.Â*Â*Just how self sufficent are you?Â*Â* And I suggest you get out in the hot sun and havest your own food. Lazy, worthless people my ass. Your opinion is so wrong this time!

the cost of everything would increase to that level so the poor remained poor. Some people are just walking scum. That's the way it is. You can try to give them every opportunity and they pi$$ it away. There was a trailer trash scumbag that got lucky and landed a $17.73/ hr. job at the power plant I worked at. A chance to get out of the cesspool he called his life. He screwed up every chance he got, abused the sick time benefit repeatedly, and got fired. He's still the same dirtbag he started out as, and will always be. He's not the only one. These worthless, pathetic parasites are the kind of trash that I do not want my tax money supporting. If you want to support them, be my guest. You know, I do realize there are some decent folks who fall on hard times and need a leg up. I'm not completely heartless. But being surrounded by welfare abusers, lazy crackheads that won't work, people cheating the system as they have been for years on end, it sickens me. When I see someone pay for their prime rib and shrimp with food stamps and then climb in their Escalade I want to stomp their head into the dirt. They're scumbags, pure and simple, and I'm sick of paying for them. How about we LIMIT government assistance to 2 years? That's plenty of time to get back on your feet, and would eliminate the vast majority of abusers. I realize this was a bit off topic, but I'm trying to illustrate that some people will always be poor, no matter how much money they make. So I still maintain that if you're trying to live on $5 an hour, it's your problem. You made bad choices, and now you have to live with them.

Difference between a self-made millionaire and a white trash/ghetto lottery winner.

If you took all the money from a self-made millionaire in 5 years he'd be a self-made millionaire. If you gave a million dollars to white trash or a ghetto dweller in 5 years they'd be white trash or a ghetto dweller.

Well, it appears people have opinions but didn't watch the show, so their opinions are not based on imperical facts. This is like believing in witches. I wonder why intelligent beings hold opinions and neglect the imperical information? What is it in their character that makes them dislike people they don't know, based on the person's faith, race, nationality, or economic bracket. I know some poor people who are sure wealthy people have serious character flaws.

I think this prejudgement of others is called prejudice. In my opinion, a prejudiced person has a serious mental problem that is harmful to the world.

I watched the show, pretty good. Oprah and her guests were even crying. As for fixing the problem of the working poor who still live below the poverty line and those a paycheck away from it, I don't know the answer except to suggest hard work, be financially responsible, and try to better your education. Raising the minimum wage won’t fix the problems these people have but it might help, at least it should be raised occasionally to keep up with inflation.

And to all those people on the show living in California/LA, move if it's so expensive there you have to live in a homeless shelter working a full time job making 8-9 dollar an hour. Sometimes if you can't make it one place it's best to try another. People in America aren't starving poor, we make sure of that. The people on that show didn't have it horribly bad compared to many other countries. Some of the responsibility has to fall on the person, the government shouldn't and can't do it all for you.
