Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf, under pressure to end a state of emergency that critics say he is using to keep his grip on power, is to quit as army chief and take an oath of office for a third presidential term on Thursday
...
Presidential spokesman Brig. Gen. Rashid Quershi told CNN that the date for Musharraf's army exit was set Monday after the federal government approved an October parliamentary vote that handed him another five years in power.

So for those that have forgotten, musharraf managed to get his next term voted on by the previous congress ahead of the elections, essentially getting an extra term for free with no input from the democratic process, such as it is, in pakistan. Then he imposed military law to replace the supreme court and make sure that his next term goes unchallenged. Then he carefully picked a successor for his military post to give the critics a trinket so they will forget that this guy has essentially granted himself another term.

Successful perversion of democracy it would seem..
