Mayberry said effectively, anyone could earn good wages providing the person is motivated to do so. He speaks from personal expereince, and his expereince is different from mine. Personal experience does not make one a good judge of the greater reality, so how about using some studies to determine reality?

This paper argues that scarcities for non-transferable fixed-supply goods such as land, infrastucture and social capital, may affect European unemployment in two, mutually enforcing, ways. Firstly the existence of minimum non-transferable capital requirements per worker implies that in a growing economy, workers must have ever higher productivities to obtain any wages at all. Secondly, the fact that non- transferable goods are not only production inputs, but are also indispensable consumer goods, increases the price of the non-tranferable goods even higher, thereby increasing again the minimum wages one needs to survive. Furthermore, in a simple general equilibrium model I show that the presence of high-productivity workers will decrease the wages (and job-opportunities) of other workers and increase the minimum wages necessary to survive. Unemployment and minimum living costs are also increased by an increase in population, by an increase in the relative productivity of capital, by an increase in the dispersion of labour quality and by an increase in the importance of capital goods for consumption.

so how about using some studies to determine reality?
"Studies" to me are not a credible source of information because it's too easy to slant towards the result wanted, just as polls are by wording of questions. Unless the study comes from an absolutely neutral party, they hold no water. How many different threads are we going to discuss the same topic in?

"Studies" to me are not a credible source of information because it's too easy to slant towards the result wanted, just as polls are by wording of questions. Unless the study comes from an absolutely neutral party, they hold no water. How many different threads are we going to discuss the same topic in?
And when are you going to discuss a topic, instead of excuse yourself for not being informed? Do you think your limited personal experience is a better understanding the world than you could have if you read available research?
Yes, the research can be slanted. When Reagan took office and replaced research on poverty with reseach on welfare fruad, the research was obviously slanted and done for a purpose.
Social researches would say this invalidates the research. The purpose was slashing domestic budgets and pouring our wealth into military spending. There was a dramatic shift in wealth and power, under the Reagan administration.
Still we need imperical information for decision making, because our limited personal experiences are not complete enough for us to understand the world around us that is beyond our personal experience of it. We manage the problem of bias, by reading a lot of research and then balancing what is said in all of it. We attempt to come to truth by discussing this information from our different points of view. But gosh, first you have to be informed. If we are not informed, what do have to say? "I work hard, and my life is great, and if yours isn't, that isn't my problem". Excuse me, but how intelligent is that? We are suppose to be self governing, but without information about the world around us, we are not prepared to be self governing.

"I work hard, and my life is great, and if yours isn't, that isn't my problem". Now you've got the picture. Excuse me, but how intelligent is that? I think it's very intelligent. By taking care of my own, I waste no one else's resources. I also do not waste my own resources. I am a very busy person. I have a limited income, but I live pretty well, because I do everything for myself. I am my own mechanic, plumber, carpenter, painter, boat builder, accountant, and whatever other jobs I need done. So I have neither the time or the energy to worry about someone else's life. I don't want to worry about someone else's life, and I don't need to. We are suppose to be self governing, but without information about the world around us, we are not prepared to be self governing. When it comes time for me to make decisions about things, I research them, myself.

But what he said has nothing to do with the planning and deals made for him to have his good job, and he isn't taking into consideration the circumstances of others, and economic reality.Â*Â*It is a very restricted personal point of view.Â*Â*Labor is cheap and it isn't hard work that equals a good income.Â*Â*
Perhaps explaining the jobs that equal a good income and how a person gets one of these jobs would be helpful, because it sure as blazes isn't about a willingness to work hard. When I interviewed homeless men, they would have gladly gone to work for a liveable wage. They were very distressed that their poor circumstances meant a good woman would have no interest in them. Their problem was finding work for a decent wage because there just are not enough of these jobs for all the people who want them.
And what if all the work that needs to be done for little pay?Â*Â*Why disrespect the people that do this work?Â*Â*Do you guys have any human values, or are you just self centered, egotistical, materialist?Â*Â* Their work is valuable. It just pays very little because businesses couldn't remain competitive and stay in business if they paid more. That is why England began welfare, to subsidize industry that said it couldn't pay more and compete for world markets. I don't think you guys have a good understanding of economic reality. But Germany was doing a far better job of providing for the people, and would have kicked the ass of every European country and Britian if the US hadn't entered the wars. It is because Germany did such a good job of caring for its people, the rest of the modern countries imitated Germany. There is a relationship between government programs and economic and military might. Think about this- the countries that are doing the poorest, are the ones that can do the least for their people.
For crying out loud, everyone's job depends on some city, county and state government planning.Â*Â*That planning is done with research.Â*Â*No industry would move into an area with as little knowledge about the area and business that is being displayed here.Â*Â*

But what he said has nothing to do with the planning and deals made for him to have his good job, There was no planning or deals made!!! I stayed in school, graduated, joined the Navy, went to more school, learned a trade, got out of the Navy, looked in the classifieds, applied for a job, interviewed, got the job! Simple! I've repeated steps 7-10 five times since, successful each time! Just get off your a$$ and do it! The WORST thing that can happen is someone will say no, so then you move on and try again. Labor is cheap and it isn't hard work that equals a good incomeÂ*Â*Labor IS cheap, SKILLS are expensive, and sorry, but good income indeed requires hard work. Maybe not hard physical labor, but hard work none the less. These jobs won't just fall in your lap from the job fairy. You have to go out and work for them. Finding a job is a full time job.Â*Â*Perhaps explaining the jobs that equal a good income and how a person gets one of these jobs would be helpfulÂ*Â*O.K. Jobs that equal good income (which is a relative term, here $12 an hour is a livable income, in NYC it ain't) are either short on available labor, or require highly skilled workers, or (lucky day!) BOTH. Since you must have things spelled out for you, you get one of these jobs by: Acquiring the knowledge and skills (school, training, OJT). Going out and seeking the job. Do this with classified ads, company websites, recruiting websites (Monster.com, etc..) Research your prospective employer and the position you seek. Interview for the position in confidence with your new knowledge. Go to work! If at first you don't succeed, try try again! finding work for a decent wage because there just are not enough of these jobs for all the people who want them. So move somewhere that does. Clean yourself up, get help (it is available) and get back on track. The tools are there, use them. And what if all the work that needs to be done for little pay? Then do this work, gain the experience, and move up later. That's what I did. I made $6 an hour when I got out of the Navy. My next job Paid $7. The next, $10.50. The next, $17.73. A little bit is better than nada, and you gotta start somewhere. Their work is valuable. Not anymore. General laborers now have to compete with hordes of illegal invaders, who are here because Americans are "unwilling" to do these jobs. Hogwash. Athena just said there are lots of folks who will take these jobs. businesses couldn't remain competitive and stay in business if they paid more. Duh? What do you suggest? Government subsidies, of course. If a business is not viable, it should and will fail. It should not be on life support from the taxpayers. Germany was doing a far better job of providing for the people, and would have kicked the ass of every European country and Britian if the US hadn't entered the wars. So now you're saying Hitler should have won? This would have everyone making good money? You've said a hundred times over that you don't like Germany's ways of "educating for military and industrial purpose". Ring a bell? Germany did such a good job of caring for its people Ask 6 million Jews about that. Oh yeah, you can't. everyone's job depends on some city, county and state government planningÂ*Â*I can't begin to count the number of jobs destroyed by city, state, and government planning. If government would keep their nose out of business, there would be more good paying jobs in this country. Hell, there'd probably be a labor shortage! So go ahead, think hard, and counter all this.
