View Full Version : Reality Show Insanity
So this is not the first rant about so called reality tv. To be certain, it is not the first time I have lobed an objection concerning the matter into cyberspace. I suppose it is more therapy than contribution to any particular dialogue.
It is one thing to have to channel surf around and ignore the absolute ignorant trash pushed on us by the likes of VH1, MTV, and the major networks. I mean, who cares which chick the guy from Poison chooses to “rock his world”? And Flavor Flav? He may indeed have “rolls and rolls of lifesavers” and be the “king of all flavors”, but he is still just barley famous.
They have reality programs now starring people who are famous for being on reality programs. “New York”, a Flav loser, for example, is going on part 2 of her show.
“Ms. New York, what is your claim to fame?”
“Well, I was rejected by the ugliest man on God’s green earth.”
So, like I said, it is inconvenient, but not impossible to work around all the full-fledged reality trash on tv. The problem is, it cannot be avoided altogether.
Even if you don’t watch it, some jackass morning radio show DJ (which lets face it, between the “morning mayhem circus” and 100 lashes I would take the lashes) is bound to fill you in on the latest American Idol or Who Can Dance like a Jackass results. And if not, coworkers, friends, and family talk about this stuff as if it’s important.
If I could address all of America, this is the four most important points concerning this matter that I would like to convey.
(1) Making a fool out of yourself on national tv is not a good.
(2) Watching others make fools of themselves on national tv is not good either.
(3) Some people should not be on tv.
(4) A bisexual female eliminating potential mates from large groups of men and women based on ridiculous competitions is not reality. In fact, it is definitive fantasy.
So please, for the love of all that is really real, please, please, let reality tv die. Please.

To the forum, does the current state of TV as a dumping ground for reality TV show garbage portray anything in particular about our modern American culture?
Has the FCC become too lax in what it allows to be broadcast during normal broadcast hours? If so, how do we balance 1st amendment rights with the traditional view of public ownership of the airwaves?
Confession time.......I watch some of these. I got hooked on the Poison one and watched it with my granddaughter and the one they have on now, America's most smartest model........hooked, who can resist Ben Stein? Kid Nation....hooked. Had to watch Survivor, because it's in China. Top Cheif, guilty. Project Runway, guilty.

I can't stand reality shows. The one exception being "the next Elvira" on fox reality. I found it by going through the guide one night. It's good because, for the most part, it avoids the "I'm going to make you miserable" aspect that most reality shows go for. There's no crying contestants or real backstabbing. The finale is tomorrow at 8 eastern I believe.
OMG......your avatar just came in focus. I love it!

I gave up on television a while ago. Sold my home entertainment center, and put a tree in its place... I read a lot more now. It's more fulfilling too let me tell you. I actually feel smarter when I set my book down (not like when you'd feel dumber from watching some blonde idiot pollute our airwaves). I do watch documentaries on the internet..and occasionally an international film or debate.. But definitely not "surreal television".

Thanks. I was going to do a regular evil pumpkin, but when I put that up I was getting confused between your posts and mine.
lily, we are going to take up a collection and send you off somewhere to get better. :lmao:
Works for me! Would it be selfish of me to pick the destination......you see if you send me to China, I won't have to watch Survivor.

I share your hate for reality television. I watch the animal planet and when I want to watch a soap opera, I watch Meerkat Manor :).
I watch a lot of Free Speech TV and PBS.
I like cop shows and those forensic science ones. But hate the reality cop shows.
I used to only get one channel for years! I was pissed to have to pay for cable when the infrastructure they are using came from my tax dollars. When I became bedridden, I got so sick of soap operas I broke down and got satellite TV. I was tired of writing to the sponsors of soaps and berating them for their view of women *L*. God those things are idiotic!
*Chips in for Lily's China fund*
I love Jerry Springer, too.

I heard a joke about the Jerry Springer show one time:
"I was watching a hockey game and a Jerry Springer show broke out."
I don't watch much TV except for news, and maybe History, Discovery, and Animal Planet channels. I find reality TV a total waste of time, as well as these gooey soap operas and crap like that. Life's too short LOL!
Purrs,
Wrestling! Now there's a reality show I can't go thru the week without. You don't know what you are missing, Pookie!

Nope, bitten by a viper and died. Although she may have eventually been eaten by something.

Reality TV is garbage. You know it's funny they call it reality, because thats exactly what its not. No one would watch it if it was reality, it would be too boring.

What's with this hooking up to a lie detector nonsense show?
Soon we are to see "who has the smallest johnson" or "stinkiest pu^^sy" show.
Oh, what Jerry Springer has wrought..[hr]Hermephridite with a teenie weenie and a fragrant furrline? "I don't care, put me on the tube!"
As long as Buck Laser is out there, a market is available to be tapped.

Yea, prime time TV is miserable, I never watch prime time TV. I like the History, Science, The Learning and the National Geographic Channels, MSNBC sometimes.

The best TV show is definitely CSI:Crime Scene Investigation. If nothing else, just because of the autopsy scenes.
All TV though seems to me to be just a manipulation of reality, and therefore not worth my time. Why do we need Reality TV Shows when there is reality? Is our own existence so pathetic that we need to dabble in somebody else's?

TCM does have good old movies, most are before my time, some are when I was very small.

I used to hate reality shows, but then boredom overcame me and I suddenly found myself hooked on the apprentice, survivor, and others. They are not going to be enjoyable by anyone if you just tune into random episodes, like most television series, you have to allow yourself to get hooked on them.
Reality shows are generally more addicting then shows like CSI, because the plots are not 40 minutes long, its basically one plot stretching the entire length of the series, not to much different from a soap opera.

I have always been told i'm different..I must truly be because I love the shows..lol.. Maybe its because I don't consider them to be "reality tv shows" rather I look upon them as comedy tv shows. I know im a 44 year old country boy that knows little more then factory work and and Probably should be happier tinkering in my garage or pulling weeds out of my garden.. but.. I love new york, and flav o flav makes me laff.. I need all the laughter in my life I can get and to me watching all the pretty girls cry and throw themselves at flav ( definatly not the most handsome man in the world ) to me strikes my funny bone hard.. haha.. I watch the rock of love and bad girls to..and lets not forget tila, what I find funniest of all is how they find there love and then just in a matter of days or weeks.. .. and in the rock of loves 1st show.. hours.. its all over and then its time to start planning season 2... haha.. can you say cough cough "bullshit"..

I like action packed flicks if there're not too over the top. I'm as yourself in the fact that I don't watch much TV, only late at night. Yea, that dancing with the stars sucks big time. I like true stories, living is fiction in itself anymore!
