Democrats are not willing to upset the cash cow,the teachers union! I thought it's for the children. If it was they would stare minority voters in the face and find the answer. They know the excuses work for the adults, bad schools, not enough money, poverty, the man keeping us down. Those excuses do nothing for the CHILDREN!:shame:

If you don't pay teachers well enough then people won't enter into the profession. Do you have any evidence that it's the unions that are an issue?

Teachers make dick as far as salary goes. Same with the police, if you keep the rate up nobody will go into the profession. I would love someone to come up with an actual solution instead of cut more money for those workers.

so far the conservative mantra has been if you don't make enough money get an education and go into another field. Well at this rate people will and we won't have any teachers or police officers. Then what?

Certain police departments pay VERY well. In Henderson, Nevada starting pay is around $70k. That's extremely respectable pay imho. Most school districts do not pay enough though.

When I provide facts, lib's disappear. I'm a member of union, and have been for 16 years. Teachers union! Not student union. They don't represent the students. Man I give up, you (LIBS)care nothing about the CHILDREN! Teacher unions fight school vouchers,Democrats fight school vouchers,WHY? Somethings broken! Drive it until the wheels fall off. Well, the wheels fell off.You don't give a rats ass. :dizzy:

Shall we pay them less, do you think THAT will improve it?

Your teacher should take the first pay cut. Hell, your teacher should hang his head in shame.

You can lead a student to the classroom, but you can't make them think.

Throow, how can there be debate when you simply disregard debate questions?

There's problems with teaching:

1. Pay sucks
2. Too many rules, not enough creativity
3. Dumbing down to fit low-ability students
4. Can't kick out discipline problems fast enough

I wonder if the recent spate of teachers sleeping with kids has been brought on by this degradation driving out the better people.

Everyone I know who has started teaching has quit, and with good reason. These are not stupid people.

Well, it seems then you are part of the problem.......what is your solution?

Here in Michigan we have school of choice. Some kids take 4-5 busses to get to the school they want to go to. If you want anything else......then I think you should have to either get a scholarship
or pay for your kid to go to a private school......there's a reason they call it private.

There are really two things that affect student success. The desire to BE a success academically and the talent behind the teachers desk to inspire a student.

An argument has been made that we pay teachers at an embarrassingly low wage, that argument is correct. Much can be done to rectify that situation; a good argument could be made that talent costs money and that higher wages will attract that talent.

Not much can be done to make someone have the desire to be an academic success.

I don't know........I see parental involvement as one of the biggest things that can affect student success.

I am sure that parental involvement plays a role as well, however, if you don't have qualified and talented teachers and you don't have students with a desire to succeed there is little to build upon.

Lily, thats a big part of a son or daughters success. My senior class had 277 graduating seniors in 1978.easily 80+ graduated. I was on auto pilot my last three years in high school. I was never asked for a report card. My parents showed little interest in attending my graduation, my name was called . I did not attend my own graduating ceremony. The first one I ever attended was my daughters. Those two nights I will never forget. My life is meager at best. Where I am now is of my own doing. When my oldest daughter was in eight grade she was on the volleyball team. I attended most games, home, and away. I happened to catch the end of the 7th graders game and their coach looked familiar. I new him, we played football together every year but my senior year(senior year i discovered pot). Damn if he wasn't completely bald. He's a teacher. Damn I wish I was his brother. You know why? Because if I was, my parents would of asked me for report cards. They would have seen me graduate. Getting my hair cut a year latter, their sat, the teachers sister with a young son. I recognized her, I was an upperclassman. I introduced myself and mentioned I saw her brother. She looked at me a little strange and blurted out"what ever happened to you". I said what do you mean? She said where did you play your collage ball you weren't a beaver were you. Oregon joke, ducks against the beavers. She was a duck. I was, I was,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, that's all.
