You can see the effect the wind is having on the fire, smoke and trees
There are so many more and each one tells a story...

Does anyone here live in the San Diego area, or anywhere in Southern CA, because that shit is ridiculous.

I do. But I wasnt evacuated. That highway in that one pic is still shut down. Outside it looks like a layer of smog covering the whole region and constantly smells like smoke, even though its about 20 miles from me. I just went outside a few minutes ago and could see ash floating about in the air...[hr]I live about a mile from qualcomm stadium, where a lot of the evacuees are staying...
here are some pics of that scene...

Well to be honest, wildfires in the western States, especially in Southern CA shouldn't surprise anyone. It's very dry there, and close to the desert too, and dry land is too vulnerable to catching on fire.
Hopefully the National Guard, local firefighters, and anyone else can stop it or slow it down.

We're at the mercy of the Santa Ana winds, once the winds die down then our firefighters can make some better progress.

Wow. I'm glad you're safe exigent. And nice idea to bring stuff to the people stuck in the stadium. That would be a nightmare.

I'd be panicking if I had fires that close. Glad you're ok.
I don't get why so many people want to move there considering the earthquakes, fires and other dangers. People must just really hate winter.

heh now they're saying that if the wonds dont stop, it could burn all the way to the ocean...that'd be wicked.

I live here cuz my job is here and paid for my school and is paying for my masters degree. People who have a lot of money live in the places that are now up in flames...east and north of san diego. If I was making that much money I wouldnt want to live up there cuz of the fire threat and I wouldnt want to live close to the city cuz its run-down...
owell. cant wait to get back to the midwest.

Geez, I feel sorry for anyone who loses their home, whether they live in fire-prone areas or what. I guess any place has its own dangers. We're all vulnerable to fires, earthquakes, storms, and all that.
It's probably why insurance policies have the "act of God" thing in there.
Purrs,

I said that to my husband last night. Just why do people want to live there? Mud slides, droughts, fires, earthquakes, crime.. yea, sounds like a great place to live.

Yeah, AnnE.
They probably deserve it.
Hooo boy, sometimes I wonder about you.

Please show me where I said they deserved it?
You do know the difference between wondering why you would want to live in a place you feel is unpleasant and wishing them harm, right?

Just why do people want to live there? Mud slides, droughts, fires, earthquakes, crime.. yea, sounds like a great place to live.sounds like you are saying it is a choice that they are making and taking on the risk of disaster, to me.
You chose not to, cool.

What do you call it then, preservation? If you live in CA and one of those disasters happens to you, would you actually be surprised?
I feel bad for them and I hope they all make it through ok, but you are pushing it to claim that I think they 'deserve' it.
Thanks for the pictures exigent. Such a tragedy.
Just a thought? When you go to Costo, why not make it Haloween treats for the kids?
.......or not.

It was fruit roll ups cuz per package they were the cheapest, and they were appreciated. I've never seen anything like what I saw when I was there, and I've seen a lot (6 year in the navy adds about 12 to the eyes). Everyone, especially the kids, just want normalcy and living in a tent at qualcomm stadium is far from normal.
AnnE most people move out here for the weather. 200 days a year it's clear skies and 72 with a breeze. Crime isnt worse than anyplace else (except that gangs are less selective about the neighborhoods they live in) droughts are rare, mudslides are rare, and earthquakes are rare and tiny. Why do people live in tornado alley, or in florida knowing the dangers of tornados and hurricanes?
I moved out here for the job. A lot of my friends from the navy did the same. On my baseball team are 2 other guys I served in japan with. But I was born and raised in the midwest, so this environment will never feel like home. But there are a lot of REALLY REALLY hot girls here also.

I think it would be awesome to live in the western states. Of course I wouldn't live in a house in an ecosystem famous for wildfires.

Kids love those things!

Last news I heard is mudslides are now to be expected as they happen every time after a fire there.

Southern California is a desert made into prime real estate by imported water. But there's too many humans, and not enough clean water, so when drought comes so does disaster.

More than a decade ago, Congress ordered replacement of the aging removable tanks for the military planes because of safety concerns and worries that they wouldn't fit with new-model aircraft. California's firefighting C-130 unit is one of four the Pentagon has positioned across the country to respond to fire disasters.
New tanks were designed, but they failed to fit into the latest C-130s. Designers were ordered back to the drawing board. Republican Rep. Elton Gallegly said Congress was assured the new tanks would be ready by 2003.
Four years later, the U.S. Forest Service and Air Force have yet to approve the revised design. Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Paula Kurtz said "technical and design difficulties" have delayed the program.
Rohrabacher and Gallegly are angered by the delay, which has left no C-130s capable of fighting fires on the West Coast. The last of the older-model C-130s with an original tank was retired by the California National Guard last year.
"It's an absolute tragedy, an unacceptable tragedy," Gallegly said.

The situation meant that rather than deploying C-130s from inside the state, Schwarzenegger was forced to ask Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to call in the six remaining older C-130s from other states as far away as North Carolina.
None of them began fighting the fires until Wednesday afternoon.
If that punk Bush wasn't wasting our money trying to run Iraq, they coulda had those C-103s ready to kill fires at the first instant..
Did I hit the right note, Preserva?
