Violence in Iraq has dropped by 70 percent since the end of June, when U.S. forces completed their build-up of 30,000 extra troops to stabilize the war-torn country, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

I don't know what to think of this. There are many factors, so it's bad logic to assume the surge caused this drop, but it's also bad logic to assume it wasn't important in this development.

Though I hope that those statistics are accurate I have some serious misgivings about believing anything that the Iraqi government says. By and large they are functionally ineffective bureaucrats who allowed their joke of a legislature to take last August off for vacation.

Violence is reported to have dropped? As opposed to this report that says the surge has been ineffective....

Despite hopes that the U.S. military "surge" in Iraq would encourage economic and political headway and sap the strength of the insurgency, very little lasting progress has been achieved, according to a new U.S. report.

Part of the drop could be attributed to the "new" methods of determining war casualties that the Bush administration is pushing to make it look like the Surge is working. I never put anything past these people.

Excellent point ECW. Twisting the numbers to suit their purposes seems to be a hobby of the current administration.

Yeah, 3 weeks of peace and hardly any violence can change in a second by one truck bomb in a crowed market place...
