Fundraising numbers came out today for most of the candidates. Both parties are already pushing nine figures before it's even 2008. It seems every 4 years the campaign budgets get more and more out of control. Does the money game determine the outcome? That's what this trend suggests to me. But I remember Howard Dean was swollen with funds from the web going into 2004, and he lost. So money may not be everything.

Money may not determine the winner of the game, but it does determine the players.

Money isn't everything, but it's the key ingredient. Americans need to participate more in the money aspect of elections. A vote is great, but if you really love a candidate that isn't the top 2, you need to support them with money too. Unity08.com has the right idea in their push for an alternative candidate: step 1, nominate a ticket for the '08 election. Step 2, have the members donate money to support that ticket. If 1 million of their "delegates" each contribute $200, that's already more money than the entire cadre of democrat candidates. Grassroots contributions can add up. That's the only way we can reclaim democracy from special interests.
