In PA they're going to place a law in place that forbids people from using cell phones while operating vehicles, I use a cell phone but I think that's a good idea.

I'd be angry. It's the law in Chicago. Sometimes you do really need it, if you're lost or something. But the majority of the time people are just talking. The really dangerous one is texting.

I don't think they should be banned in cars. There are situations where you really do need to be contacted and waiting until later, while it's what we all used to do, can have serious negative effects. Hands free sets, which are usually the alternative, have just as poor of a safety record as actual cell phones do. And since they even put them in car radios now there would be no real way to know if someone is using one or just singing along to a song.
I think people should be careful when they use them and only use them when necessary. I also think I should take my own advice and stop looking for addresses and phone numbers on my phones internet browser while driving, or making calls simply because it's a long drive and I'm bored.

I'm fine with it as long as they don't pass a law that says I can't sleep while driving. Then I'm gonna be pissed off.

This is a hard one because everyone can agree they are dangerous but we all love them. It's very hard to put your money were your mouth is.

Sounds like a good idea but is the implementation right?

Yes indeed.[hr]

Well, what the state is saying is that the use of cell phones is ok if your using a blue tooth or something equivelent, but the actual holding of the unit won't be permitted.

According to Snopes.com, the PA law doesn't make cell phone use illegal. I was looking at Snopes earlier today while I was trying to track down a rumor, and I saw that. I don't know any more than that. But Snopes has an excellent record for debunking and setting straight.

They should be banned in every vehicle. Some people just cant talk and drive...especially here in socal. If you absolutely need to use your phone, you may pull over to the side of the road. You really wont be THAT late. I've seen too many accidents ALMOST happen cuz some dumb chick is on her phone doing 40 on the highway in the middle lane, or not making safe lane changes or something.

There is a law like that here. If you are going to use your cell phone in the car, you must use it hands-free.

I don't like cell phones, and I especially don't like them when driving. I don't own a cell phone. And I regularly have to change lanes -- or should I say swerve lanes -- to avoid a cel phoner.

Hmm. Maybe the law should disallow passengers conversing with the driver...
All hail the Police State!

PH, I think you're going overboard on this. I've had so many near misses with drivers yakking on their cell phones that I'd be glad to see 'em shot! Last year in Austin, a cyclist was hit and killed when a motorist didn't see her as he took a fast exit from the road.
Yeah, I know it's an infringement on your freedom and all that, but that driver kinda permanently infringed that cyclist's freedom, didn't he?

Buck maybe you didn't notice that exigent claims that some folks can't talk and drive. In that case, I guess the driver better not talk to his passengers...See how lame that is?
But you're right about people driving and cellphoning.
My wife in April of this year was sitting stationary at a light behind a pickup truck. Yakking on the phone. She thought the light had changed when it hadn't and stabbed the accelerator. Drove the Hybrid right under the guy's bumper. $9000 worth of damage.:dizzy:
I told her she had to stop talking and driving and she said OK, but she started again...
If there's another accident of that type, I am moving out...

Cell phone talkers drive too damn slow. They are so intent on their conversation they don't know what's going on around them. You get home and can't even remember the drive. Yes, that would be me. I've done it. And I get annoyed at the person in front of me when I'm not on the phone and they are.
GO!!!!! Ya idiot.

For me it's eating while driving that's bad. I can talk on the phone while driving. I can talk on the phone and play with the radio. I can talk on the phone, play with the radio and drink coffee. When I smoked I could talk on the phone, play with the radio, drink coffee and smoke. But the moment I threw eating into the mix or even try to eat just by itself I start swerving, running red lights and hitting things.
So outlaw eating the fries before you get home.

You know that I was referring to talking on a cell phone while driving. Thanks for being absolutely literal.
But yeah, some people cant talk and drive. Some people have a hard enough time driving without talking. Do you disagree? So why give THOSE people a cell phone and allow them to be a danger to anyone near them by letting them talk on the cell phone while driving?
I've had gf's that werent too bright in my day. It was scary enough just to be in their cars...and when they try talking to me while driving it got worse...people like that talking on cell phones is a recipe for death.

Maybe if this lady wasnt yapping on the phone, she'd be a bit more aware of her surroundings and maybe at least minimize the damage from the accident where she was hit by a guy who ran a red light. I cant say for sure though...she probably didnt even see it coming because she was concentrating on forming sentences and not on the road. This is just one example though...

Most of the time it's these young kids, and I must also include women, pardon me ladies but those have been my near accidents with cell phone use. I have a cell phone, but if the situation places my driving dangerious I won't use it nor answer it.

Law's banning the use of cell phones in cars, I think, are set backs. The government complains the death toll in our country is rising due to disease, accidents, and murders, but in a way cell phones could help bring it down. It is a proven fact that many accidents occur while talking on cell phones, but when it comes down to it, if there really was an emergency happening to you on the road or at home, the cell phone is a great way to contact help or get notified that someone needs help when there is no other phone device around.
Unnecessary talking on cell phones shouldn't be done while driving, but everyone is guilty of it at some point. You should focus on driving, I agree. I think the only thing state governments should pay attention to is texting. Texting while driving is completely unnecessary and shouldn't be done. Period.

Texting would be impossible to moniter by police, it can't be done. I say get a head set, they have them hands free, it's the only way too go. I find bigest offenders of cell phone use are teenagers, in particular girls. 'They' can't drive very well to begin with:clapper:

I use a hands-free, voice-activated earpiece/mic on mine, and I find it no more distracting than listening to the radio or talking to a passenger. What makes me nuts is idiots texting while driving, or they have one hand stuck to their ear and only one on the wheel. That's dangerous, especially for new drivers.
The safest and most logical thing to do, however, is to pull over and stop when making or taking a call. Even though I'm hands-free, I often do that, especially in bad weather, heavy traffic, or on a bad road. And if I'm really in a messy driving situation, I ignore the phone.

I agree with the handsfree headset. It makes things easier and you don't have to look at it while driving.

A simple solution is allow people to use cell phones with headsets ("hands free"), while disallowing texting and normal use.
EDIT: Didn't read the whole topic, Pookie took the words out of my mouth :P
