House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in a determinedly good mood when she sat down to lunch with reporters yesterday. She entered the room beaming and, over the course of an hour, smiled no fewer than 31 times and got off at least 23 laughs.
But her spirits soured instantly when somebody asked about the anger of the Democratic "base" over her failure to end the war in Iraq.
"Look," she said, the chicken breast on her plate untouched. "I had, for five months, people sitting outside my home, going into my garden in San Francisco, angering neighbors, hanging their clothes from trees, building all kinds of things -- Buddhas? I don't know what they were -- couches, sofas, chairs, permanent living facilities on my front sidewalk."
Unsmilingly, she continued: "If they were poor and they were sleeping on my sidewalk, they would be arrested for loitering, but because they have 'Impeach Bush' across their chest, it's the First Amendment."
Those " vagrants " are what brought the Dems into the majority.
Sounds like she is none too keen on the 1st Amendment when it is used against her.
I say tough f* ing sh1t ! It is about time you were made to feel uncomfortable over your uselessness. Do your job and your " problem " will go away.
"We have to make responsible decisions in the Congress that are not driven by the dissatisfaction of anybody who wants the war to end tomorrow," Pelosi told the gathering at the Sofitel, arranged by the Christian Science Monitor. Though crediting activists for their "passion," Pelosi called it "a waste of time" for them to target Democrats. "They are advocates," she said. "We are leaders."
What a condescending, arrogant attitude.
She acts as if the Dems no longer need nor want the support of their base.
That base is what elevated Team Pelosi and Team Reid into their respective leadership roles.
Kissing the asses of the Blue Dog Democrats is what is causing Pelosi her troubles, but she instead blames her supporters for the grief.
Just labeling oneself as a " Democrat " is no longer protection against being criticised for voting with BushCo.
The base raised the Dems up and the base will bring them back down if they refuse to do what they were elected to do.
They always find ways to hem and haw: always choosing to live to fight another day instead of make a stand on anything.
Not everyone is afforded that luxury.
The latest proposed display of spinelessness is to capitulate fully to BushCo over FISA gutting; opting instead to direct all their efforts toward S-CHIP.
If they can't walk and chew gum, what good are they?
