After reading comments here about the Ed Schultz show on this thread, I went back to my iPod and listened to Ed Schultz last night again, and actually head Schultz speak with Ron Paul.
I thought I’d list a few of his policies and thinking
First impression is that he does not give “tutored” answers, but thinks about the question and gives answer on what he thinks is right.
About him getting USD 5 million from grassroot internet campaign : he seemed surprised himself about it, pleasantly.
Does he think he is getting a fair shot by the media: he thinks it is more or less average and what can be expected. He acknowledges that his coverage could have been better, but he says he does not dwell on it. The internet grassroot movement for example shows that there are ways other than depending on main stream media, to present a political view to the masses.
About Guiliani : Schultz asked Ron Paul to comment on some big shot from the conservative movement that told Schultz that if Guiliani won the nomination of the Republican party, it would be the end of the Republican party. Ron Paul was asked if the conservatives decide to ditch Guiliani and go for someone else, could that be Ron Paul. Mr. Paul did not think that was going to happen. He also stated that he is not thinking on those terms and has no desire to court the so called Republican conservatives to woo them away from Guiliani. However, Paul said he is more worried about a Guiliani candidacy because according to Paul, Guiliani is even more aggressive than Mr. Bush on foreign policy and same time cutting civil rights for Americans. Ron Paul says he is fearful that Guiliani is capable of stripping civil liberties of Americans to a level higher than Mr. Bush could.
About the media helping Guiliani : Ron Paul agrees. He says that there is a lot of financial interest in the media that is linked to the military industrial corporate America, and they don’t want to change the policy in the middle east. He also mentioned that he is just dumbfounded by the three main Democratic candidates (Clinton, Obama and Edwards) who claimed that they think US soldiers are going to remain in Iraq till about 2013 even if they became president. He thinks the Democrats have not listened to the voters of 2006 and that this comment likely shows excessive pressure being exerted by the same military industrial complex, no matter which party and which candidate wins. He even asked Schultz “what is going on?”
Would Ron Paul pulls the troops back home in his first term (4 years)? He answered that it would be tragic if it took that long. He wished to bring them home in 3 months, but if logistics and other considerations made that impossible, surely they could be brought home a long time before 4 years or 2012. He does not think USA needs to establish a stable democracy in Iraq first, and instead, should concentrate on fixing the democracy back home in USA, which itself is in very serious trouble and needs fixing. In fact he even mentioned words like USA being in no position to establish democracy elsewhere when it cannot even fix its own democracy.
Whats his position on abortion and Row vs Wade ? Ron Paul does not like abortion, believes unborn babies have some legal rights. He believes Row-vs-Wade should be overturned. However, and here is the catch on his thinking – he also says that the federal Govt should never pass laws either helping or hindering abortion because it is not federal Govts business, neither should it have the power to pass laws overturning state legislations. This issue of abortion should be left to the states to address whichever way they like. He personally does not like abortion but he would remove the federal Governments power to overrule any state law anywhere, on abortion, no matter which way the states wanted it. He also stated he would not try to overturn California passing laws legalizing marijuana, even if he personally did not like marijuana. Basic issue for him is like this – the States shall make what laws they like, and the federal Government would have no power to overturn them, irrespective of what the President stands for.
Would Ron Paul consider running as an independent? No. Reason is, he has tried it once before. It does not work. The Republicans and the Democrats have a monopoly hold on the election machinery and an independent has no chance at all unless he is a billionaire - You can’t get into media, you cant get into debates, you cant get a fair hearing, etc.. So, if he does not get the Republican nomination, he is not going to run. He even lamented that that there is a very strong bias against independents.
What does he think about the recent senate vote on the Liberman-Kyle amendment that labels the Iranian revolutionary guard and Iran as a terrorist state? Mr. Ron Paul called it a “war propaganda” in building a case against Iran, and that the war propaganda is marching rather quickly in preparing the American people to go into another war, even when the majority of the people want Americans out of Iraq. In this kind of heightened tension, if an incidence occurs, whether it is trivial or accidental, it can then be used as an excuse to go into another country and protect our troop etc. He is afraid that the American people will be coaxed to stand behind it and endorse the draft because USA does not have the military men in uniform to carry it through. IN his words, we are living in a very very dangerous times and he blames the leaders of both parties.
There were more issues discussed, on medical care, Mr. Bush’s veto on childrens helth care, cutting overseas spending, financial crisis etc. Ron Paul is sure USA is heading for a financial crisis.
Well anyway, you get the gist of the man, because he got many minutes of one to one discussion. He does not mince his words, and gives the impression of not being one that could be bought by big money.
In the end, its the Schultz show appears a lot better in content and quality than the Limbaugh show. Just my opinon.
Cheers.
