Nothing new in Pakistan

Pakistan has completed its national election and Pervez Musharraf won the presidential race. Any doubt that he would, since all of his challengers dropped out of the race?

Well yep he's bound to win, as he's a strategic asset to the United States. Pakistan won't have genuinely democratic elections as the people would vote an Islamist government into power. This would be particularly bad for the US as Pakistan actually does have nuclear weapons.

I'm not sure how long Musharraf will last. Elements of the Taliban and so on are operating from Pakistan as well. It's only a matter of time before there's a coup attempt from a Taliban-like group.
