A debate between candidates running for Georgia's fourth congressional seat went on Friday without incumbent Cynthia McKinney. Instead, Alpharetta businessman John Coyne III and former DeKalb County commissioner Hank Johnson faced each other for one of two televised debates.
The person they really wanted to challenge was a no show for the event. The candidates said that's sending the wrong message to the people of DeKalb County.
"She only has votes to lose and none to gain and she knows that if she shows up for a debate, the three or two we've had so far, I believe, Ms. McKinney has been on the losing end," candidate Coyne said.
Johnson added, "I think it sends a message that she's not taking her job seriously. She's not taking her opponents seriously. She's not taking this campaign seriously."
McKinney's campaign confirmed her appearance Thursday night but on Friday 11Alive News was told the congresswoman had previously scheduled meetings with constituents. The debate was taped and will air Monday on Georgia Public Television at 7 p.m.
The winner of the July 18 democratic primary for the 4th congressional district seat will face republican Catherine Davis in November.

ATLANTA (AP) -- U.S. Representative Cynthia McKinney let an empty podium speak for her again on Saturday as she skipped the second of two televised debates in the race for the 4th District.
Organizers of the debate say they received no response from McKinney?s campaign about whether she would attend, despite numerous attempts to contact her to confirm.
Still, media panelists opened the hour-long debate with three McKinney-related questions before quizzing candidates John Coyne III and Hank Johnson Jr. about issues including the Iraq war, education, health care and immigration.
Both candidates were quick to contrast McKinney?s style to their own, vowing to be consensus builders who would avoid controversy and taking advantage of her absence. Organizers of a debate sponsored by the Atlanta Press Club on Friday say McKinney never answered their invitation, either.
McKinney appears to enjoy wide support in her predominantly Democratic district, which includes a small portion of Gwinnett County and most of DeKalb County.
Supporters seem unfazed by a March scuffle with a Capitol Hill policeman with whom McKinney argued when he did not recognize her as she entered a House office building in Washington. The incident led to a grand jury investigation, but she was not indicted.
McKinney did not immediately return calls seeking comment Saturday afternoon. On her congressional Web site, she listed today as the date for one of her District Days, scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday's debate was scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Atlanta Press Club debate will air on Monday.

That's the second.
 Yet this district will probably give her the primary win?
No accounting for taste I suppose.
