View Full Version : Since when did it become acceptable to use a corpse as a joke?

I thought this belonged in the ethics forum but, since we don't have one, I was left to decide between religion, political humor and off topic. Since the topic itself isn't a joke and the question isn't lighthearted I chose here.
I saw this on a postcard at Newbury Comics, which is a local record store chain:

Now, honestly, I think the joke is hilarious, and I wouldn't have an issue with it if it were a cartoon. It's perfect as a cartoon. But to take a real corpse, Pope or not, and use it to make a joke? I don't think so.

Oh that is so funny. It does look like Santa. As far as I know the dead don't care if you joke about them.
Where you been, Zo? This has been floating around for quite a while now. I see your point but sometimes you have to laugh at things. All respects to the Pope, this is funny.

Nothing's sacred in the West, not even the Pope's corpse.

This is simply more evidence of the coarsening of society and of the collective loss of what used to be considered a sense of propriety Zo.

Yet the fact remains that every Pope I can remember--since Pius No. whatever--has had his body on display, as John Paul's was. Maybe I'm one of those who just wants to deny mortality, but displaying a body like that seems a bit creepy. So my objection starts a bit earlier than the "cartoon."

One has to think that God has a sense of humor too.

The butt of the joke is Bush not the Pope.

Yeah, it's not a joke about the Pope, it's a joke about how dumb Bush is. So I don't think the corpse is the joke. Bush is the joke.

That was hysterical.
Yeah, people need to stop being so PC. It's ridiculous.
