I am reading in the blogs about the Viet Nam War Memorial being defaced over the past weekend. Has anyone found anything in the major media about this?

I haven't but if it's true, whatever person(s) did it is nothing but a low life pig.

That is completely uncalled for.

Agreed. Defacing that memorial deserves a stiff sentence. But considering that we haven't heard anything on the news, could be a bogus story.

I guess I'm not as outraged not that I read the story. If it had been graffitti, or something that doesn't really come off, then I'd be more upset.

While I still think the vandals should be caught and prosecuted to the full extent, "oil-like substance" on the rocks and glass seems more assinine then vandalous. But that's just me.

While I understand the damage wasn't extensive, at what point do you get offended? That mere act, IMO, warrants kicking that person's ass.

The most tragic part of the vandalism is that the damage appears to be permanent. The Park Service employee who talked to me said that the initial diagnosis was that the oily substance had stained the stone. He said another analysis would take place tomorrow.

Just looking up vandalized Vietnam war memorials, I found a whole bunch of instances of memorials across the U.S. being vandalized. Take this one for instance...

Vietnam Veterans Memorial defaced
Crystal Bozek and Michelle Morrissey

Many veterans in town were disappointed to learn last week that someone had vandalized the town's Vietnam Veterans Memorial, requiring the 15-month-old memorial to be sandblasted Wednesday.

"We know that in no way does this reflect how the community feels about our veterans," said Michael Burke, director of veteran services.

The lyrics of a 1970s protest song and a reference to Iraq were scrawled on the monument in the Park. "War, what is it good for, absolutely nothin'," was written in red marker along with a peace sign.

The lyrics are from "War," a song that Motown soul singer Edwin Starr popularized in 1970.

Near the base of the memorial where the phrase "our cause is just" is etched, a vandal wrote "just like in Iraq."

The markings were made with some kind of felt marker, which soaked into the stone, Burke said yesterday. Methuen Monument is helping the town repair the memorial, which was dedicated May 29, 2006.

While there was no structural damage, "the stone does need to be sandblasted," Burke said. He was not sure how much the work would cost, if anything, but said the town was grateful to the Methuen business for stepping in to help.

Police Lt. Harry Collins said the vandalism was under investigation.

Burke said this week he has talked to several veterans and longtime residents, and that no one could remember something like this happening in Andover.

"This is a disappointing event," he said. "This is an anomaly. If someone does have opposition, there are other ways to vocalize that."

In Haverhill earlier this summer, vandals ruined parts of a Korean War Memorial and spray-painted a World War II monument.

I guess, for me, I'm still offended, just not as much. Again, I agree that the ass kicking is in order, but this isn't much in what I was expecting. It's like hearing that there's been a "Horrific Crime" and come to find out it's a little old lady that's not hurt but gotten mugged.

No graffitti, no destruction, looks like some clean up and that's it. For me it's something to prosecute, but not quite up to my standards of vandalism. Thankfully.

From what I am reading DS, there is some permanent damage as the material was caustic. Has anyone else read this?

Then let's find the dude(s) prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law and throw them into jail, or at least the holding tank, with some vets.

But I'd feel that way regardless.

Now if there was grafitii, like "Fuck the Vets", or damage, as in a section was knocked over, I'd be more on a rampage and be willing to respond more violently AND more economically, i.e. higher fines.

But this doesn't get me going like the above would. I think that's why you're not seeing it as a major story, even at Conservative news sources.

Yeah, but it doesn't matter. Nothing is sacred anymore. Let's all go burn some churches and desecrate a few graves. No one cares.

This country needs another revolution... and not with mere words.[hr]

I would've thought you'd hold our fallen brothers in a much higher regard. But hey, what the hell do I know?

My Dad served two tours in Viet Nam as a Marine Corp helicopter gunner. I sent him this story and the link. He's a Conservative tried and true. His answer was "Go get the jerks, force them to clean it up, then make them go to Walter Reed to work on the cleaning crew for a few months."

I'm fine with that too. That or prosecution.

Just out of curiousity, what - specifically, do you want to see done, OR?

What I'd like won't happen in my lifetime. There's just too many people who've lost respect for themselves, their country and the sacrifices others have made so they can be free. I'm at a loss. I don't know how much further we can go into the gutter, as a nation, without permanently residing there. I see no short-term solution.

Well you and I differ there, OR. I see great hope for our future. As someone that wants to teach young people and has two daughters, I see a future that is bright.

Not that there aren't problems, but I'm not as down in the gutter, I mean dumps, as you are...

I'd like to see more of those who profess to be in support of bush's endless war to actually participate it themselves.. but like you, I know that will never happen, because those blood thirsty war mongers just don't have the intestinal fortitude or the patriotism to enlist...
