I just watched the Republican Debate on Fox News. They did live questions from people at a Restaurant and one person ripped Romney for a comment he said eirler in the week reguarding soldiers in Iraq and something about his son but never said what it was, does anyone know? It has seemed to piss a lot of people off from what I understand.

I think it was this:

Romney's gaffe occurred on August 8, while at an "Ask Mitt Anything" Town Hall meeting in Bettendorf, Iowa. That's where Rachel Griffiths got up and asked Romney if any of his five sons were serving in the military, and if not, how did they plan to support the war against terrorism? "The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it," Romney told the crowd, adding, "[O]ne of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected, because they think I'd be a great president."

You don't have to be a paid political observer to instantly recognize that Romney really stepped in it by equating his sons volunteering to help get their millionaire dad elected president with other people's sons volunteering to serve in Iraq. I mean, does elitism on the campaign trail come any more unvarnished than that?

The remark, posted on YouTube, was especially offensive considering Romney campaigns as a gung-ho supporter of the Iraq war and has been urging support for President Bush's war policy. The "good news," according to Romney, was that his kids don't have to fight if they don't want to. http://mediamatters.org/columns/200708130007

"One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I'd be a great president," Romney said.

Four of Romney's boys are actively involved in the campaign. The fifth is in med school.

Romney specifically cited the efforts of his son, Josh, who has taken an RV dubbed "the Mitt Mobile" to all 99 of Iowa's counties this summer.

The answer didn't please the person who asked him the question at a town hall meeting, an anti-war activist with a sister who served in Iraq,

Said Rachel Griffiths: "He told me the way his son shows support for our military and our nation is to buy a Winnebago and ride across Iowa and help him get elected." http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0807/Sacrifice_.html

I think this is the question you are asking about:

Here's a funny spoof on it:

And here's Romney saying he mispoke (after talking about his dog on the roof of the car for a road trip).

What a fucking moron, well... one more down, not that he ever stood a chance in the first place.
Did you see the smirk on that Romney's face while that guy was asking him why he compared his sons service in his campaign to that of the troops over in Iraq dieing for this country? What a freaking moron. I don't think he could possibly be more full of himself.

What an asshole................

Actually he had a great chance of winning, he was leading in several states including mine. I was thinking about supporting him until I heard this. What a complete slap in the face to every soldier that has been is currently there or died in Iraq and the War on Terror. What really gets me is that he wants to continue this War until we win but then he makes a rude remark like this. Screw him. I will write a name in if he gets the nomination or I will vote for Dodd if he makes the ticket.

I like Dodd too NM.

Romney seems to be a rich ass who has no idea what's going on in the real world.

Also if he wins, and its near the end of his term, he may be in France bad mouthing America. At least that's what he did when he was the governor of Massachusetts and went out west.

"[O]ne of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected, because they think I'd be a great president."

I don't get it. What's so bad about that quote?

He said it in an answer to a question about how many of his son's were serving in the military. His answer that his sons were serving this country by helping get him elected angered people who have sons in Iraq, because he was comparing driving an RV to a campaign stop to fighting in the war.

That's what's so bad about the quote.

Over a breakfast in Bettendorf, Rachel Griffiths, 41, an anti-war activist from nearby Milan, Ill., asked how many of Romney's five sons are serving in the military.

"The good news is, we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it," Romney replied. "My sons are adults. They've chosen not to serve in the military in active duty and I respect their decision in that regard … and one of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I'd be a great president."http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/election2008/2007-08-08-romney-sons_N.htm
