As expected, Romney bought the victory @ ~$1300 per vote.
And Guiliani + McCain did poorly given the fact that they conceded defeat some time ago.
But then I found a list of the # of visits each candidate made to Iowa, and the results don't mesh.
Republican Candidate Trips To Early States
Candidate......IA...NH...SC...FL
Giuliani..........26...24...13...14
Romney.........90...44...20...22
F. Thompson....0....2.....1.....0
McCain..........26...27...22...14
Brownback....115....4...12....2
T. Thompson.143...14....1....0
Huckabee.......71...17...18....2
Paul..............15....6....3....0
Tancredo.......67...14....3....0
Hunter...........24...15...18....2
Interesting that Ron Paul garnered more votes than either Guiliani/McCain.
(EDIT) also interesting that the columns were orderly in the preview, but the final product is not. I give up.

Yeah, it's hard posting in grids. I tried once, disaster. :shame:
That's weird seeing how the visits and the votes don't add up. The only thing I can think of is Iowa itself. Last I was there I saw mostly corn fields. Maybe they didn't hit the majority of the citizens because more are tucked away in farm lands?

14,000 +/- total votes tells me that this group doesn't instill anything but apathy in the electorate.
With no mystery candidates waiting in the wings, Republicans are in for a real hurtin' come next November.
I read somewhere that Obama polled higher than most of these also-rans - and that was among registered Republicans.
Will post link later if I can find it.

MADISON, Wis. -- Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson is reportedly dropping out of the presidential race.
A Milwaukee TV station is reporting that the Republican hopeful has ended his White House bid after Saturday’s sixth-place finish in the Iowa straw poll.
Thompson’s campaign hasn’t issued a formal statement, nor has a spokesperson returned several calls from The Associated Press.
WITI-TV said Thompson told a reporter on Sunday morning that the disappointing finish was like being hit by a Mack truck.
In the months leading up to the straw poll, Thompson repeatedly said he’d drop out if he didn’t finish first or second.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won the poll.
Romney took 32 percent of the vote, while Thompson took around 7 percent.
Thompson spokesman Brian Dumas said an announcement about Thompson’s future would come Sunday or Monday.
Thompson, 65, was Wisconsin’s longest-serving governor. He won an unprecedented four terms before resigning when President George W. Bush appointed him Secretary of Health and Human Services in 2001.

That can't be true, bobby,
He was all over the state news... gaining momentum at the st. fair in Milwaukee.
How could the press ever get it wrong?

Yep. Apparently for the 2000 election, 24,000 people showed up to the same event. The party lost 40% of their hard-core supporters in 8 years - bad, bad news for the GOP. That's with Romney all-but-paying people to show up and vote for him. He spent $5M campaigning for this straw poll. $5M for a straw poll, and he still got less than a third of the vote - the mind boggles.

Already a thread about it in the Obama forum.

Its the liberal media trying to run him down I guess.

He was apparently devastated by his 6th place finish because he thought visiting Iowa 174 times would assure him victory. He wouldn't be elected anyways, that "Bush appointee" thing will hover over him for the rest of his political career and I think its a shame. Maybe we could recruit him to run Doyle out of office.

Bobby,
Oh, you mean this one...?"I'm outta the race," Thompson told MyFoxMilwaukee.com.

I'm at least glad to see that Ron Paul made the top 5 in the votes.

The only good thing Junior did for Wisconsin.
Maybe we could recruit him to run Doyle out of office.
Bite your tongue!
Haven't we been punished enough?
