(CBS) NEW YORK What was thought to be a violently windy thunderstorm that plowed through Brooklyn Wednesday morning turned out to be a weather event of historical proportions.

The National Weather Service confirmed that the storm brought with it Brooklyn's first ever tornado since such weather events were recorded. Officials measured it to be an EF2 twister, characterized by winds of anywhere from 111 to 135 miles per hour.

Between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. a string of severe thunderstorms blew through the region, making for an incredible headache for morning commuters. Thousands of New Yorkers found themselves enduring hours of delays in the sweltering heat with subways shut down and vacant taxi cabs hard to come by.

A woman on Staten Island died in a car accident which officials say was a result of the horrible driving conditions. In Brooklyn, amazingly, only scattered minor injuries were reported.

Still, the tornado certainly rattled bones as well as bricks, especially in Bay Ridge.

Digg This Story!

"About 6:35 this morning it sounded like a freight rain coming down the driveway. The house was shaking and people were screaming," said Linda Mantia, who lives in the Bay Ridge section.

"I just wanted to lay down and die," Brooklyn resident May Johnson told CBS 2.

Eric Casanova couldn't believe what he saw out his window. "I looked out my window and the trees looked like dandelions. They were flowing all over the place," he said. "They say you get 15 minutes of fame, here in Bay Ridge it's 15 minutes of history."

Not only is the tornado the first ever in recorded history to touch down in Brooklyn, it's also the first to hit a New York City borough since 1995, when a twister struck Staten Island.

Outside of those two, there have been only two other tornadoes to strike New York City. The first touched down in Queens in 1985 and the second in Staten Island in 1990.

Record-keeping of tornadoes began nationwide in 1950.

You misunderstand, Cheesy. It was the Ay-Rabs who caused the tornado by eating massive plates of felafel, then farting in unison. You need to tighten your tinfoil hat.:madlaugh:

I remember one time hearing a tornado was headed towards my town, then it veered of onto some highway to somewhere else.

No real damage, but to an 8 year old who had only seen tornadoes on tv, it was scary. And as an adult who has never seen or heard of another one coming, it would still be scary.

I hope a tornado, along with a real earthquake (we get tiny tremors than no one without the right equipment seems to feel), is something I'll never see.

Hurricane bob was kind of cool, though it was kind of weak by the time it got here. I remember going to a party down in cambridge when that was hitting, it was difficult to walk.

I was going to comment on this being Brookland's first tornado, I though that was really odd........then I read that Zo's never seen one either.......but then I've never seen a hurricane.

Waterspouts are also magnificent to see form.

Did Global Warming Cause NYC Tornado?

Aug 9 07:30 PM US/Eastern
By DAVID B. CARUSO
Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK (AP) - Flooded subways? A tornado in Brooklyn? It was tempting to blame it all on global warming.
Plenty of public officials were doing just that in the aftermath of a short but violent thunderstorm that paralyzed the nation's largest mass transit network and tore the roofs off limestone townhouses. But in reality, it is not quite that simple, weather and climate experts say.

The storm, which gathered strength over Pennsylvania, drenched New Jersey and then pounded the city at sunrise Wednesday was strong but not particularly rare for a hot summer day, said Jeff Warner, a meteorologist at Pennsylvania State University.

Climate scientist James Hansen, director of NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies, agreed: "You cannot blame a single specific event, such as this week's storm, on climate change," he said.

"However," he added, "it is fair to ask whether the human changes have altered the likelihood of such events. There the answer seems to be 'yes.'"

Storms, Hansen explained in an e-mail to The Associated Press, are fueled by heat and moisture, and our atmosphere is becoming warmer and more humid.

And that, other experts said, has tended to mean more rain and rain that is more intense.

Plenty of Brooklynites were thinking global warming. What else could be to blame for an honest-to-goodness twister in a place where the word "cyclone" usually means the roller coaster on Coney Island?

The city's top water and sewer official, Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Emily Lloyd, said the deluge may be evidence that the region is seeing an increase in the type of intense storm cells that used to roll through only once every five or 10 years.

And as his crews pumped millions of gallons of water from submerged train tracks, Metropolitan Transportation Authority Executive Director Elliot G. Sander said: "We may be dealing with meteorological conditions that are unprecedented."

Nationwide, total rainfall and snowfall increased by about 7 percent during the 20th century, and the precipitation falling in the heaviest 1 percent of storms increased by 20 percent, said Jay Lawrimore, chief of the climate monitoring branch at National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center.

"It is undeniable that the heavy precipitation events that create flash flooding are becoming more common," Lawrimore said.

Climate scientists generally measure weather changes in decades or centuries, not years, and across vast regions, not individual cities.

But New Yorkers could be forgiven for being suspicious that something about the weather has changed recently.

"This is supposed to be a rainfall event that is a once-in-a-decade occurrence—we've had three in the past seven months," Gov. Eliot Spitzer said Thursday, after the tunnels had mostly dried out from the latest deluge. "We've got a serious issue to worry about."

I don't know what thread you're reading, but you seem to be the only one making this claim. I don't think I've even seen too much blaming Bush in the few enviormental threads I've read, other that ignoring it........but hey whatever floats your boat.
