(CBS) A new CBS News/New York Times poll out Thursday shows 63 percent of voters believe it's likely that Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton will be elected the first woman president in U.S. history if she wins her party's nomination.

While opinions about the New York senator are strongly divided by gender, majorities of both men (59 percent) and women (65 percent) surveyed think it's very or somewhat likely Clinton will win the presidency.

Even most Republicans (53 percent) think Clinton will win — as do 77 percent of Democrats.

Here's hoping they get this one right!

Given the fact that the most popular Republican candidate right now is "None of the Above," I would say it's Hillary's race to lose... ;)

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,554 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone July 9-17, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher. An oversample of women was also conducted for this poll, for a total of 1,068 interviews among this group, by selecting them with higher probability than men in households with both men and women. The weights of men and women in mixed-gender households were adjusted to compensate for their different probabilities of selection. The final weighted distribution of men and women in the sample is in proportion to the composition of the adult population in the U.S. Census.

Ok...so asking 1500 americans (1066 were women) really means nothing. Polls are worthless for the most part.

Not after his "sex for kindergarteners" idea.

And now he's shoving his foot deeper in his mouth. He came out and said that preventing genocide in is not good enough reason to stay in Iraq.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!

The more he speaks the more idiotic he looks.

Polls are merely a reflection of the way part of the electorate is hinking at the time. They are very fluid and can change from week to week. Don't put any stock in them but don't ignore them too much either. Given that there are not too many ways that people can effectively communicate with their political leaders, polls are a way to give them feedback about their personal standing. The only poll that counts, however, comes on election day (if the GOP hasn't corrupted the electronic voting booths, that is).

I almost wish I was a registered Democrat so I could vote for Obama. Hillary as President is one of my greatest fears for politics. I just think it will be 8 years (if she gets in ...she gets in twice) of polls deciding our policies and not the constitution.

Obama...well...at least he isn't in the back pockets of large corporate backers. In general..I like what Obama has to say. He seems intelligent, has new ideas, and is a good speaker.

"Almost wish I were a democrat?..." WTF? After you went to all the trouble you did to disaffiliate yourself from the republicans, now you want to be a democrat? :P

I think I can understand a bit of why Senator Clinton makes some people unhappy, but I think the "she's a socialist" rap is pure, unadulterated pigshit. She's not my first choice as a candidate either, but the more I see and hear of her, the more I believe in her competence to do the job. Just the fact that the right wing is cranking up its noise machine against her makes it clear that she's the one the GOP fears most. I'd really hate to see a repeat of the bilious rages so many republicans went into anytime Bill got mentioned.

And a small part of me thinks that you'd like to see Obama get the nomination because you think he'd be easier to beat.

But whatever happens, the democrats are in better shape for truly viable candidates than the GOP is. Now I'm gonna go to bed and pray for Gingrich the Newt to get the GOP nomination!:P
