Hi everybody,
First I want to say I’m new in this forum and I have got a few questions but I don't really know if I am right here.
Well, I am a 15 year old girl and I live in Germany. I have to write an essay to win a scholarship for a high school year in the united states of America.
The task is about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I have to discuss if the U.S. is ready for a black or female president.
Well, I am not from America and I don't know how the american people think of this. But I believe it would be very interesting to hear some of your opinions.
I would be very happy if you could help me! :)
Thank you very much.

I have to discuss if the U.S. is ready for a black or female president.
That's a rather sexist, racist assignment.
This is the 21st century, women (who want to, who pursue such) have been in power in every aspect of American life for decades.
Ditto for race, red, yellow, black or white.
And Obama isn't "black" he's of mixed race. But aren't we all?

Thanks for your quick answer!
But know I have got another question... You say women have been in power in every aspect of American life.
But there was never a female president or a black president in the United States. But why? If you say it don't matter if they are red yellow, black or white why has there never been a black president before ( Jesse Jackson )?

Women have risen to power as elected officials, currently Nancy Pelosi is the 3rd in line (behind Cheney), they have also ran billion dollar companies, and so on.
With a national election, one must remember that the more educated a person becomes the less racist he or she may be. In congregations of large cities, the level of education is higher than the areas in between those cities. However the number of uneducated people outside the big cities is much higher.
a classic example is the 2004 election. Those who voted for Kerry (blue) were mostly in areas of high population density, where the areas between were all Bush (red)
http://bigpicture.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2004_vote_county_by_county.jpg
Note the areas won and the population of those areas won. This implies that Kerry was popular in small areas with a large population.

If Obama can convince industrialized racists to vote for him, it will be a landslide. His challenge is the midwest and south. Those areas have a lower education level, on average and higher dependency on religion.
The same can be said, in a way, for Hillary. If Hillary or Obama can convince ignorant religious hillbillies to vote for them, they'll be golden.

why has there never been a black president before ( Jesse Jackson )?
We're a nation of 300,000,000 that has had no more than 42 people serve as president.
There's many many many types, shapes, colors, whatever that haven't been president with that ratio. IT's just the logical result of the statistics.

Thanks again for the answer!
And another question :D ...
Is it possible to say who ( I am only talking about Hillary or Obama) has got more chanches to win or who is more popular?
And this question again, don't you think it will be a problem for Obama that he is black (or mixed )?
Maybe that sounds racist and rude of me now but in Germany we often hear that there is still a lot of racialism between black and white people in the U.S..
And that most of the black people are kind of "second-class" people.
Well that's not my opinion and I don't want to hurt someone, but we often get to know that from media...

Money. Whoever has the money gets the advertising, airtime, publicity. That and keeping your nose clean. The closer we get to the election, the LESS their values matter, in my opinion
And this question again, don't you think it will be a problem for Obama that he is black (or mixed )?
His challenge is getting the popular vote, especially in the midwest. His lack of experience is also a factor.
Maybe that sounds racist and rude of me now but in Germany we often hear that there is still a lot of racialism between black and white people in the U.S..And that most of the black people are kind of "second-class" people.
I'm sure your school tries their best to explain our culture, so I'll avoid that one.

Hillary is, and always has been unpopular. The Clintons never won the popular vote, they only won by a viable 3rd party candidate being in their races, so Obama wins that one by default.
don't you think it will be a problem for Obama that he is black (or mixed )?
No, not at all, even the opposite.
in Germany we often hear that there is still a lot of racialism between black and white people in the U.S..
OF course you do. We hear you all are a bunch of Nazis over here. But that's not true is it? Media will be media, influencing instead of informing, always working an agenda.
And that most of the black people are kind of "second-class" people.
Understand that makes sense to me because we think a German Nazi would hold that opinion and our media give us the impression you all are a bunch of NAzis.
But my black friends who did Army tours in your country -- actual Amercians traveling and meeting actual Germans, not either media's images -- speak very highly of your actual lack or racism. Something about your train system, if they got leave, they just hopped on the train and WENT!
The beautiful thing is you and I meet through the internet, DIRECTLY, you and I, like traveling by train, no media, no agenda, just people being people.
What amazes me is, I never, ever was assigned to write anything about current German politics. Ever.

Thanks again for your answers!! You gave me some very helpful suggestions!
Now another question :D:D
Who is allowed to campaign for president? And who is allowed to vote?
and....
What seperates Democrats from Republicans?

There you go.
in Germany we often hear that there is still a lot of racialism between black and white people in the U.S..
Not really but tensions are still pretty high, people are just too afraid of being called a bigot or a racist to do/say anything about it.
And that most of the black people are kind of "second-class" people.
That is absolutely still true but I don't believe its because of racism as much as the tendency of conservatives to ignore the poor and under privileged in populated areas. Its tough to understand the problems if you've lived in a bubble your entire life. I'm not even going to get into the attitude of most Christians in this country in regards to the poor.
What seperates Democrats from Republicans?
It is almost entirely their views on abortion, the war and gay rights. Right now at least.
The task is about Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I have to discuss if the U.S. is ready for a black or female president.
To be honest, I don't really think anyone outside the conservative southern bible/bigot belt is really considering the race/gender of the candidates. If they were, wouldn't Obama be winning the black vote?
I think we have been ready for a few decades now.
Is it possible to say who ( I am only talking about Hillary or Obama) has got more chanches to win or who is more popular?
Ultimately, Hillary will be our next president and Obama our vice president. I have seen no poll that shows Obama anywhere close to being in the lead. I've been saying this for a long time now.
Please just ignore Marley, his rabid partisanship and nationalism ruins any chances for discussion of anything political.
Now its my turn to ask a question..
What do the people in your country think about our nations continued occupation of Iraq, which is now against the support of the Iraqi people and even the country's president.

Bobby, insinuating that conservatives are racist does a grave disservice to Clare's education.
Clare,
Remember this a forum filled with opinions
I would consider anything not in quotes or a cited link, to be opinion.
Be prepared to be propagandized by the liberal Democrats.

Hillary in a 2 way race guarantees her opponent's victory.
Clintons have never won the popular vote and their popularity hasn't changed.
Clintons need a strong 3rd party candidate with a conservative message to win the presidential election, it's the only way they ever have.[hr]Condi Rice, black (all black) female (all female) Sec of State, Republican, not born with a silver spoon.
The urban legends are getting so trite.

The more I read it the more it proves my point concerning libs.
You're not satisfied with brainwashing with lies the youth in this country, you now have to go overseas.
Not really but tensions are still pretty high, people are just too afraid of being called a bigot or a racist to do/say anything about it.
Hogwash.
However, it still doesn't seem to stop you.

This is all backasswards.
A lot of conservatives are poor southerners, white and black, they must be ignoring themselves.(?) this fact has never stopped the northern lib elites from continuously impugning, making fun of and ignoring them.
The viciousness towards conservatives by the lib patricians is brutal and painful o witness. They completely write off an entire segment of America as stoopid hick inbreds How evil and bigoted!
To be honest, I don't really think anyone outside the conservative southern bible/bigot belt is really considering the race/gender of the candidates. If they were, wouldn't Obama be winning the black vote?

WHAT?
The libs are ALL ABOUT race.
That's ALL they talk about.
These are lies and I think a 15 yr old can see through them.

My, my. Namecalling about your correspondents on a political forum...
Preserva, there are forums who don't let us opposition types in...
Maybe you wish we would all just disappear, but then who would you argue with?
Clare, your questions are relevant to our political process. I don't think that the US will elect a woman president yet. The Democratic Party may be too wary to nominate Hillary. They want to win.
And Obama? The conservatives (and many are racist) are a majority in the US. Nominating a candidate of mixed black ancestry will do nothing to garner that crucial segment of the voters.
But I will say this...Americans are fed up with the stinking Republican Party. Bush's doctrine of the Unitary Executive violates all of our political traditions. And there has been little opposition from his party.

It would be a shame to have this bumped to fp, poor clare.
It is dishonest to say that there some racists in one party without including all parties and all peoples.
You know what you are doing PH, and so do I.
I just hope Clare does too.
Have at it.

But why? If you say it don't matter if they are red yellow, black or white why has there never been a black president before ( Jesse Jackson )?
Because you need someone qualified and to win. Jesse Jackson is a moron. It doesn't mean Americans are racist because they don't elect him, it just meant they wanted someone with more than half a teaspoon of brains.
People are more than just their gender or ethnicity. Though we have had black and women presidents run before they didn't win because they weren't what the nation wanted.

Currently, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are both in the top 4 U.S. Presidential Candidates, along with Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani.
You can't be "ready" for a black or women president. Everyone has the right to try, so its not like we're forcing them not to run. If your asking who's more likely to win, as of now it Hillary.[hr]

Heh.
Double post IN THE SAME POST!
Fred Thompson is not an announced candidate, so I don't see how he could be in a tight race with Giuliani...
