WASHINGTON, May 31 (RIA Novosti) - Relations between Russia and the United States are on the brink of a crisis, U.S. administration officials say, according to The Washington Post.
"Administration officials said privately that the situation has reached a crisis stage and needs to be reversed before it gets worse," it said, adding that the U.S. president's aides do not expect to resolve the stickiest issues dividing the two sides during the visit to the Bush family retreat on the rocky Maine coast July 1-2, but hope that the relaxed setting "will restore U.S.-Russian relations to a more constructive footing."
The paper said the White House has grown increasingly alarmed lately with "the harsh tone coming out of Moscow and its hardening positions on issues that include Iran's nuclear program, Kosovo statehood and missile defense."
But the U.S. State Department said Wednesday Moscow and Washington "have a good working relationship."
"I'm not minimizing the fact that there are real differences between us on this particular question or on other questions as well. But this is not the Cold War. This is not the U.S. and the Soviet Union. They're a major power, they're an important country, and we are very pleased that we can and have worked with them so well on a variety of issues, including some of those questions that I just talked about," Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey said.

New Russian missile to be deployed soon
31/ 05/ 2007
TOMSK/WASHINGTON, May 31 (RIA Novosti) - A first Russian deputy prime minister vowed Thursday to have the new Iskander theater-level missile deployed "very soon," saying it is as important for strategic stability as the recently-tested RS-24 ICBM.
"To maintain strategic stability, Russia needs this weapon as well as modern strategic weapons," Sergei Ivanov said, following the successful tests of both new missiles on Tuesday, adding that the Iskander system with the new R-500 cruise missile will be deployed in the nearest future.
"This cruise missile is entirely new, and very precise. It can be used to project pinpoint - I would even say surgical - combat capability to great distances," said Ivanov, a former defense minister.
In response to Russia's missile tests, U.S. State Department Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey said: "they don't need a new missile system to overcome any future missile defense system we're planning. It's not designed to prevent the Soviet Union or do anything to change their strategic capabilities."

A Recent Moscow TV show revealed that the new SS-26 (“Iskanderâ€) tactical ballistic missile is designed to defeat missile defense systems. Judging by this revelation, the principle defense system the Russian designers had in mind was Patriot. This candid disclosure sheds light on the Russian marketing objectives: To offer the Isknader to countries like Iran, Syria and others who confront US operated or US supplied Patriot PAC 2/3 systems.
