West unable to act against Iran, Ahmadinejad says

Day after end of deadline to halt uranium enrichment and in light of possibility of additional sanctions, Ahmadinejad says 'sanctions will hurt Western countries more than they will hurt us'

The Western powers are unable to act against Iran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Friday morning, the day after the end of a deadline set by the UN Security Council to halt its nuclear program.

On the backdrop of the increase in the United States' military pressure, as nine warships arrived in the Persian Gulf, Ahmadinejad spoke in the city of Golpaygan and said that "the Iranians are living in faith and unity under the leadership of Iran's spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and therefore the world powers will not be able to make life difficult for them."

On Thursday, the Iranian president ruled out out even a brief halt in his country's nuclear program, saying it would hand a victory to the country's enemies who seek to prevent Iran from becoming a world power.

The ISNA news agency reported that the Iranian president referred to the Security Council's resolutions as "having no influence."

According to Ahmadinejad, "These sanctions will surely hurt them (the Western countries) more than they hear us, and will bear no fruit."

Ahmadinejad's outburst followed Wednesday's report by the UN nuclear watchdog that said Iran has expanded its controversial uranium enrichment program in defiance of UN demands for a suspension. The report could set the stage for a third round of UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.

The Iranian president is currently visiting the Isfahan region, where the nuclear facility for uranium enrichment is located. At the moment it is unclear whether he plans to visit the facility, but inspectors of the UN nuclear agency are visiting the site these days.

Mohammad Saidi, head of the International Department of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said Thursday that the inspectors were visiting the Isfahan facility according to the decisions of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and that they would move on from there to the uranium enrichment facility in Natanz.

Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful, aimed only at developing energy, and has touted it as a sign of its technological prowess. The United States and its allies contend it is secretly aiming to develop nuclear weapons.

But in a reflection of international divisions on how to handle the crisis, the US has lodged a complaint against the head of the UN nuclear agency, Mohamed ElBaradei, for suggesting that Iran be allowed to keep some elements of its uranium enrichment, diplomats said. Such comments could undermine efforts to pressure Iran into fully scrapping the program.

US President George W Bush said Thursday he would work with allies to beef up sanctions on Iran. ''We need to strengthen our sanctions regime,'' Bush said in a Rose Garden news conference. Leaders of Iran ''continue to be defiant as to the demands of the free world.''

Sorry CWN. I missed the but where he is taunting the West into attacking. He just said the sanctions will not hurt him. But will hurt the West more. Is he planning a few Oil sanctions himself maybe?

These US sponsored sanctions are achieving nothing. Ahmedinejad has tried on several occasions to open a constructive dialog with the US but they keep ignoring him and make belligerent statements and threats instead. You achieve nothing by being confrontational.

Does Iran not have the right to defend itself against Israel? During the war in 1967, Israel claimed much of the property of the allies of Iran. Who will stop Israel from tryng to claim the territory of Iran? Who will fight the wars of aggression against peaceful Iran?

When you have nothing to say to someone you don't answer the phone. Iran has been told point blank by the US and the UN to stop it's nuclear ambitions.

I hope we bomb the freakin hell out of that place and then just leave it in ruins and walk away. That's what we should have done with Iraq.

1. I don't think Israel wants anything in Iran.
2. If Iran keeps doing what its doing, Iran can expect and problem to develop.
3. Iran better put on its a$$ kicking pants with pillow option, cause they will need them.

Is there an agreement that Iran takes orders from the United States?

You can't have all stick and no carrot when you are trying to negotiate. Iran knows that we are strapped. We don't have enough soldiers to plan an attack.

Oh yeah, like that's going to work........I can just see it now. Thank you for bombing us and all the neighboring countries thank you too! Honestly do you think we can get away with that without world condemnation and without a retalitory strike at our soldiers in Iraq?

I know it feels good typing let's bomb them, but it's unrealistic.

Actually, I'm not sure whether or not Ahmedinejad's eyes are as close together as Dubya's.
But it's a grave mistake to call a madman someone who has the potential to start a war.

Unfortunately we're in the area and we could have another "Shock and awe" episode. Bush is stupid enough to do something like this and get us involved in a situation I truly believe he would like to see happen.

Plumbjim as desperate as he is for a legacy and the fact that the Democrats caved and said he doesn't have to have their authority to attack Iran keeps me up at night.

You know, I was really concerned back in 2000 when Bush got elected, but kept telling myself he had Cheney and Rumsfailed, who served his father well and maybe they could keep him in line and things won't be so bad.........man was I wrong!

I do believe the Bush family and a few others have moved America toward a one world government as no others ever could. For the common man and woman we have become a service Nation. The jobs for them have been outsourced to China, Mexico, and a dozen other countries where they can be done for penny's a day instead of a livable wage as they were here. Now they work in the restaurants, supermarkets, fast food, construction, and so forth. Few factory jobs are left here for those who can't or will not attend collage. There are still millions of people who cannot afford collage for their children.
He would like nothing more than an open border policy as the one world policy dictates. There will be the have and the have not, and the middle class will be only the collage educated people. Right now if you have only a high school education, you are probably living below the poverty level. If not, your children will certainly be there without the collage degree. Money and power are the order of the day. Am I a "Doom and Gloomer"? With the way things are now, YES I PROBABLY AM.

Since when has the US been delegated as Supreme World Leader who's every demand must be obeyed? Iran has a totally legal right to Nuclear Power under the NPT.

Correction, thats what you have done. You just haven't walked away yet.
