It has been a rumor for a while. Now it looks like it will happen. This should drop the price of a new laptop by at least $100 I would think.

What I would like to see is Apple and Dell make a deal. I have heard that rumor also, but so far no dice..

I wouldn't hold my breath for that much of a reduction if you choose Ubuntu. The choice is not on the Dell website as yet so we will have to wait and see.
Having just installed Ubuntu on two of my machines, I can say I'm mightily impressed.
Everything just works!

It's an excellent Distro. It's jumped to the top of the pack in a relatively short time.
I was 50/50 between Ubuntu and OpenSuse until Novell decided to dance with devil. Makes me question their judgment, to alienate a large part of the FOSS community.

Ubuntu is a very good OS. I am glad Dell is going out of the way to offer it to customers. I think it is a good PR move.

I'm sorry but what is Ubuntu? I googled it and got nowhere to explaining what it is and what it did.

Hi Professor,
Ubuntu is a version of Linux that is intended for desktop use by the same people who would normally choose Windows. It is very simple to operate and install and has very good community (read free) support as well as commercial (read costs money) support.
You can even download what is called a LiveCD and boot to it on your machine and play with Ubuntu without ever installing it, then reboot to your Windows environment if you don't like the Ubuntu OS.
Read about it here: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/WhatIsUbuntu/desktopedition
