How do we choose between America's two major political parties? Democrats believe community interests are superior to individual self-interest, and Republicans believe legitimate self-interest is more important. Democrats pick community interests expecting everyone to be equal. Republicans pick legitimate self-interest, as we are all created equal. They believe individuals have a right to their own life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Democrats believe only community has those rights. Democrats see government supporting community interests above self-interests. They see taking private property from one person to give to another as justified when it benefits community. Republicans believe free and prosperous communities grow from prosperous individuals. Republican ideals set America apart from the rest of the world and led to the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Will our choices in 2008 eliminate individual liberty for the compassion of communalism? Which is the best party choice for America's future?

This is, in my opinion, a limited view of both parties. Both parties hold various communitarian ideals and neither subscribe to classic liberal American ideals. Neither party is "best". They're both fairly similar and fairly opposed to concepts of individual freedom. 2008 will bring just one thing: more of the same.

Perhaps neither one. Let common sense rule, whatever party that is.

I think the Republican party has moral authority. It was founded by Jesus.

So was the Democratic party... I wouldn't hold my breath on either side of the debate. It's all about money and status. Most of these people don't care about the average Joe's.

I like your qualifyers -

The republican "ligitimate" self interests

The Democrat - no qualifyer...just community interests. Why not "legitimate" community interests? I'm sure thare are some aren't there?

Oh...that would add some weight to those interests over individual interests....

Way to define the argument...

Do legitimate individual rights include screwing everyone else for self gain....of course....

I don't believe for a second that the current crop of regressive republicans believe everyone is created equal.

Fine set of talking points you have there though.

Did I mispell legitimate? I am thoroughly convinced the present Democratic Party is a socialist party. I am convinced the Republican Party has no spine or if it stands for anything today. I know many Democrats who are leftists, and I know many Republicans who are "conservatives" and believe as I do that America is different and its founding document is the Declaration of Independence, as did Lincoln. Which is best today? Easier to answer which is worst, and to that I would have to say the Democrats.
