I posted this on another website I go to and I got some interesting responses.Â*Â*I private messaged each of the members whose ideas I found interesting to see if they would be comfortable with me reposting it on here.

I got one okay, I am sure more will trickle in slowly.

how do the results indicate that lesbians have better body image than other women? anyone read the study first hand? how did they test for this? self report? the summary is sort of crappy... if they are just talking about weight then just talk about weight. but to discuss weight for most of it and then throw in body image without any explanation or having it relate to anything else in the article is rather useless. it's almost like they are assuming that weight and body image are one in the same.

i don't know about whether or not more lesbians are overweight. but from my experience, i wouldn't say they necessarily have better body image. i've known a helluva lot of EDed* lesbians and from the accounts of many of them, their non-EDed counterparts don't sound so body-satisfied themselves. plus i think a lot of issues with or insecurities about sexuality (lesbian, hetero, bi, or whatever) tend to manifest themselves through food/body image problems more than most other issues would.

Hmm, yes.Â*Â*I have known a few overweight lesbians in my time. I'm not gay myself but I would say many seem to have higher levels of self-esteem than straight women. I would say that this has a lot to due with the fact that being gay separates them already from a lot of what is considered to be "normal" and "feminine" for women. I would also say that probably more gay women actively consider themselves to be feminists, perhaps making them less likely to starve themselves to meet beauty ideals. I'm not saying this is true across the board, there are obviously gay women w/ eating issues, there are many here!

lesbians that i know seem to come in two forms ... really thin lipstick lesbians and crunchy granola lesbians, and overweight butch lesbians.

i think that coming out is enough of a challenge, that by the time you've accepted your orientation, you either have really integrated stuff, so you probably have a generally better self-image, or else if you haven't you're in AA/NA. least that's the way again my friends & acquaintances seem to be ...

It is indeed strange that the vast majority of lesbians you see all fit the mold of fat and short haired.Â*Â*Pretty weird.Â*Â*Maybe they get recruited at barbershops or something.

Actually I think I just hit gold with an idea. I'll create the first ever buffet/barbershop. It'll smell like a fishing port but I'll be raking in the $$$ so I won't care as bad.

well, as it is for everyone straight or gay, there is who you fall in love with (which we know deep down has little to do with what they look like) but then again so far to me thats crap, and i DO usually only go for a type with both men and women.

and for girls, yes. it is skinny. i love it when they are bone skinny, too. or very skinny but with ropey muscles. smaller then me, is what it is. i used to say that i liked being the bigger half of the relationship. i mean, ive gone out with thicker girls, and i can see them as beautiful.. but the one that makes me tingle if i see them walking down the street are the skinny ones.

i wonder sometimes about that, if it has anything to do with the eating disorder, the want to be with versus want to BE complex.. because i DO want their bodies.. both ways it can be taken. so im confused.. but then i decided just to not think about it too much lol

I wonder how much of this is because the "ideal" is yourself. With a hetrosexual woman her sexual lust is a tall, muscular man. A homosexual's ideal is a woman, curves, boobs, all things she also has. She is her own image of lust.

Not necessarily. Most Lesbians I have met are quite girly. I even dated one who was bi. She complained about being too skinny when I thought she was just about right lol.
