This is the 400th year of the Jamestown settlement. Some say it is the foundation of America. Soldiers and profiteers, and later African Slaves, characterized Jamestown. It was an extension of the rule of King James and the Old World. The real founding of America was yet to happen. It was Plymouth Rock and the New England settlement in 1620 that characterized America. The King did not rule New England. Soldiers did not fight Indians. Profiteers did not scrounge for riches to send to Britain. It was simply a church resettlement. Soon relieved of the yoke of theocratic rule, the people were free to make their own way in a new and threatening land. The American dream was born. Ordinary people could own land. They could follow their own interests, talents, skills and aspirations. They could think out of the bubble and live out of the box, not possible anywhere else. New England formed America, not Jamestown. Plymouth became the rock felt ‘round the globe. The shot heard ‘round the world came from New England. New England American accomplishments forced the Old World to retreat. New England Americans led the fight against slavery once introduced in Jamestown. The 400th anniversary of the founding of America is still 13 years away. Jamestown should not have that credit. Jamestown was the Old World. Americans ultimately threw them out of their New World.
