The forever silenced Virginia Tech victims’ plight became even more tragic as NBC News granted the deranged waste of humanity known as Cho Seung-Hui a platform. The shock and horror endured by the families of those killed is beyond comprehension. The damage which was compounded by NBC News is also beyond comprehension. NBC News’ sick perversion for ratings over ethics further wounds the families of those murdered and endangers the American public’s safety. Not one major American television news outlet refrained from what can only be described as newsporn. They chose to reward a mass murderer with immortality and assaulted once again the loved ones of those slaughtered. The families, the public, those yet to be buried deserved much better from a news company granted the privilege of public airways.
Airing the deranged mass murderer’s video offers incentive “outsiders” looking to have their moment on TV by destroying innocent lives. NBC News will have blood on their hands as future sick mass murderer will inevitably seek to gain their moment of immortality.
The false claim by NBC News and other outlets that “struggled” on their decision, but decided they wanted to help people “understand” the mass murderer is the height of arrogance, ignorance, and lacks common sense. Forensic psychologists like Michael Wellner beg to differ. He resolutely makes the case that such a video offers no understanding and he further claims the extensive playing of the video is a, “social catastrophe”.
According to Dr. Wellner, “If anybody cares about the victims in Blacksburg and if anybody cares about their children, stop showing this video now…. These videos do not help us understand him.”
What did the families of those murdered think? Family members scheduled on NBC’s Today show the following morning cancelled their appearances in protest of NBC’s airing of the footage. What did those at Virginia Tech think? The students turned their backs on nearly all of the media letting them know they are not welcome on campus any longer. The reporters could not get the time of day.
At least one North American television news entity had the integrity and thoughtfulness to silence the one person that should have been silenced by not airing the killer’s video. American media needs a lesson in ethics and common sense from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Editor in Chief, Tony Burman, of CBC News vigorously defended the decision not to air the useless rants of Cho Seung-Hui for gratuitous ratings. Burman further excoriated those giving Cho Seung-Hui a forum, “This kind of coverage does trigger copycat killings and it’s my personal fear that there will be another even whether in two weeks, two months or two years that we can trace directly back to the way many networks and newspapers broadcast these images, and that would be very sad, and avoidable.”
NBC failed as a gatekeeper with its exclusive possession of the harmful material.
Tony Burman noted that the CBC was “overwhelmed” with calls, e-mails, and other correspondence applauding the decision not to damage the victims’ families nor the public further. CBC chose to silence the one voice that should have been silenced; the voice of Cho Seung-Hui.
The monkeys will see, and the monkeys will do. Already throughout America there have been numerous school closures due to threats after the Virginia Tech trajedy. Here are a select few.
* Michigan: Rochester Adams High, Rochester High, Van Hoosen Middle School, West Middle Schools, and Kalamazoo Community College
* New Hampshire: multiple schools in the Winnisquam School District
* Oregon: Blachly School Disctrict
* Virginia: Culpeper County Schools
* California: Castro Valley Middle School
The over the top coverage granted to the worst school mass murderer by the American media is sick, wrong, and will leave the blood of innocents on their hands. Not only did Cho Seung-Hui silence 32 innocents, the American media ravaged their families inflicting further needless agony on those already wounded with devastating loss.
God bless the Virginia Tech community and the now silent souls of the innocents.
