Mandation? The nation really dodged a bullet not electing that lady to high office.

She's definitely been disappointing as a commentator. I thought she'd be pretty good at it, because she's usually charming when just bantering. But she's kind of generic and boring instead.

When she's being interviewed she's the folksy color commentator contrasting against the intelligent and prepared interviewer. What they need to do is pair her up with a real journalist.

I don't think Hannity and Palin really listened to the President's Speech because they are doing exactly what he asked every one to stop doing. But what do you expect? We can't even stop partisan bickering on this forum for 1 day, why should we expect the media and politicians to change because one man, the President asked them too? Pretty sad indeed.

If she invented the word, that would mean it has never been used before and that is just not the case.

Except it isn't a new word. It just isn't commonly used in the U.S. but it is a word.

That specific word might not be new.
But.
New words get invented all the time.

No kidding. Imagine, she might have even misstated the number of states in the union...can you imagine the backlash from NATO is word got out on that?

Websters says no. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/mandation)
mandation - no dictionary results
But there are examples of the word being used elsewhere (http://www.ask.com/web?q=Mandation+Policies&qsrc=6&o=10603&l=dir). For example (http://www.aare.edu.au/92pap/brair92136.txt):
Yet not all educational innovation comes about in such a meaningful way. Often innovations are introduced into schools through mandation.
So she's not making up a word. She's just using a word that others have already made up.

There are other examples where it is used as well. Seems to be a phrase used in the UK and Australia.
From the Guardian (http://society.guardian.co.uk/thecarbonquestion/story/0,,2287205,00.html)...
America went for mandation [making something mandatory] and, 10 years later, no one in the world is building a plant without scrubbers," he says.
Healthcare for the Uninsured: Is Mandation the Answer?Beadle Compensation Benefits Review.1989; 21: 17-23 (http://cbr.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/21/6/17)
She also could have read, A Dictionary of Political Thought (http://www.scribd.com/doc/18277031/SCRUTON-Palgrave-McMillan-Dictionary-of-Political-Thought), in which the word is mentioned several times. Hey...you never know. :p

She also messes up the pronoun in the same sentence. It's "of him", not "of he".
Not that it's a big deal, but she messes up her pronouns, tenses, and grammer quite a bit. It's a weird combination when combined with her prim, kind of schoolmarmish persona.
PS Before anyone asks, schoolmarmish is a real word used in Australia and in some Canadian newspapers.

I'm impressed that Sarah invented a word, or at least plagerized from British English. There's an aura of truthiness to it.

There used to be a commercial, I recall, where the word "origination" was used - as in '...the origination of your idea' or somesuch. Drove me crazy. (The proper usage is, simply, "origin.") And that's a long way from the first time I ever heard some dumb-bunny improperly put the suffix "-ation" at the end of a word to try to sound smarter. (I even mock such silly constructions by taking them to extremes - "inventing" words anchored by multiple redundant prefixes and suffixes, and sometimes both - and then sprinkling them in conversation ...words like "propreredactifiedification" which, of course, is the past tense of a preemptively active prior act of the process of redacting ...and just happens to be patent nonsense too.) In the context of what she was saying, "mandating" is the word Palin ought to have used.
The subjunctive form of mandate is mandative. Maybe she was groping in that general direction.

The two that bug me are "irregardless" instead of regardless, and "reoccuring" instead of recurring. At an old job, we talked about recurring charges endlessly, and more people got it wrong than right.

You, as an attorney, should have, above almost everyone else, a professional respect for language and its proper and consistent application. Could you get away with making up words in court? Not even close. So then why should politicians or TV commentators - two other classes of people whose livelihood depends on language - have free license? It's one thing to coin a word in some written piece where you can leisurely go on to explain what the new mint means; but quite again something else to blurt out a new coinage extemporaneously and then just keep moving on as if everyone was born understanding the definition.

Really? Because a lot of the time her sentences don't even make sense, to the point where Tina Fey used her actual words as part of her famous parody, yet Palin is making a mint speaking across the country and keeps being brought up as a candidate for President in 2012. Unless she's getting paid two bucks everytime a head rolls, I don't see a problem.
I realize you're comparing her to Obama's treatment in his 57 states gaffe, but I'd point out two things- 1. That is brought up constantly by conservatives, including over and over again as a response to each singular gaffe by Palin. 2. How is Joe Biden treated? I'll answer it- the 30 year Senator, long thought of as having the best or at least one of the best offices in Congress, known for his expertise and experience in foreign policy, is treated as a boob and a joke. And despite the fact that he speaks far more eloquently and has far more political knowledge than Palin, he will never earn the speaking fees she does. Nor is he considered a candidate for President.
But you're right, last year Obama made a stupid mistake in a speech. It got a lot of laughs and not a ton of real coverage, probably less than Palin has gotten in her gaffes. And that probably wasn't fair, though I'd point out that Obama hasn't really made any similar gaffes since, whereas Palin keeps throwing out weird syntax and garbled sentences over and over again.

She does have free license though....but it lowers her value as a commentator as well. Or at least should, and I'd expect even her base will move away from the idea of her as President once she's been on Fox for a while. Because let's be honest- the biggest reason Palin has been so popular over the past few months is that there's nobody else with star quality speaking for conservatives. By this election cycle, I'd expect other candidates to start outpacing her.
She's definitely been disappointing as a commentator. I thought she'd be pretty good at it, because she's usually charming when just bantering. But she's kind of generic and boring instead.
That is because she has not new material. She repeats the same old talking points over and over again. The far right is even getting tired of her. it is apparent that her only goal in life is to make money.

I meant replacing her as one of the top 2 prospects for President. To put it more boldly, she will no longer be thought of as a Presidential candidate at all after another few months as a commentator. If you don't believe me, ask Mike Huckabee.

Mandations: If you are talking about working schedules the employer can tell you when you are to come to work and when you may leave. He may mandate you to work overtime and also to cover other schedules. :bye:

What about her continual use of 'he' when 'him' was correct?
I hate the way she speaks.

I'm sure he is. But he's a conservative candidate who lost the tea partiers, plus he can't overcome granting clemency to that Seattle cop killer.
Palin won't have a clemency issue, but the more she commentates, the more people will like her but not think of her as a Presidential candidate (IMO of course).

Wow I am glad all of you who are criticizing Palin are all experts in the English language.
Palin is not very good on camera in interviews. She comes across a a bit of a phony because it always seems she is struggling to impress the interviewer with the best words she can find in her vocabulary instead of just relaxing and saying exactly what she means most briefly. She seems uptight and self conscious which also seems to get in the way of her response(s). I don't think she is any more or less "smart" than most of our legislators. She merely needs work on her "on camera demeanor".
The gaffs of Biden and the "57 states" statement by Obama are no less "dumb" than some of Palin's statements but it is the media that gives each one the "legs" or the proetection in the "story".
