Kerkik, he might be able to talk his way out of....being married 3 times and defending her not as the other woman, kind of gets harder the closer we get. Saying hel'll let her sit in on cabinet meetings didn't go over too well, and now......... (http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/04/report_giuliani.html)
Report: Giuliani's wife worked for company that killed dogs
A few days after GOP presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani announced that his
wife, Judith, would be welcome to attend cabinet meetings at the White
House, the New York Post reports this morning that the registered nurse
worked as a traveling saleswoman for a company that killed dogs to
demonstrate surgical staples to potential clients.

Earlier: Paper says ex-NYPD commish, Giuliani partner likely to be indicted

"It was a horribly cruel, outrageous program," Friends of Animals President
Priscilla Feral said, according to the Post.

According to the tabloid, a Giuliani spokesman said "only that Judi had not
been involved in procuring dogs for sales demonstrations - but did not
comment on whether she participated in demonstrations involving dogs."

In a 1988 story about a woman who was accused of plotting to blow up the
offices of U.S. Surgical Corp, Time magazine reported the company "uses
hundreds of dogs a year to train doctors and the company's own salesmen with
the high-speed surgical staplers it manufactures. The trainees practice by
stapling multiple surgical incisions on anesthetized dogs, after which the
animals are destroyed."

Leon Hirsch, the company's president, told the magazine at the time that it
was important for his employees to use live animals. "A dead dog doesn't
bleed," he said at the time. "You need to have real blood-flow conditions,
or you get a false sense of security. A stapler improperly used is a very
dangerous device."

I am no Giuliani fan, but in fairness to him he did clarify the cabinet meetings remark.

I am against animal cruelty, however, let's face facts here. Our medical industry has skyrocketed due to testing procedures, medicines, and operations on animals.

Many medicines that are used to day over counter were first tested on animals along with operations and such.

People want the medicines, operations, and procedures if they are good, but they don't want to know where they came from.

I agree with you %100 El, but this one sentece is where I draw the line:

The trainees practice by
stapling multiple surgical incisions on anesthetized dogs, after which the
animals are destroyed."

Well the republican party welcomed Senator Bill "Kitty Killer" Frist, so I doubt this will matter.

I actually have more problems with his 'clarification' than his original statement. If the first lady wants to sit in on some cabinet meetings, I really don't have a problem with that. Some of the best presidencies in our country's history have been characterized by motivated, interested first ladies, strong women who work beside their husbands and give their feedback on topics that they're interested in. Giuliani's 'clarification' sounds a bit too much like reassurances to the Republican redneck neanderthal base that he'll keep her in line, limiting her to redecorating the White House and maybe an occasional photo-op. Gotta make sure that women know their places, after all.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand: I really hate it when animals are killed for medical purposes, but I do understand why it's often necessary. As long as the company did everything possible to keep the number of animals killed to a minimum, and ensured that the animals didn't suffer, I really don't consider this a huge deal. Of course, those are a couple of really big 'if's, ones that many companies utterly fail on, but I'm sure the matter will be more than thoroughly investigated, what with a presidential candidate being involved.

I love all animals and probably will never resolve myself to torturing and killing animals to test human products. I think I may be able to accept testing for medical uses eventually (after 50 years I'd better get to acceptin' it too :D), however animals are tortured and killed testing for cosmetics and toy products. I doubt I will ever accept using animals to test cosmetics and toys...tortureing* and killing animals for vanity and entertainment crosses the line.

Puppies are my favorite...I'd sooner use the staple gun on this womans head than the puppies....then euthanize her skank whore ass....

Okay, I'm not against animal testing for necessary medical procedures, though I do believe we should remember that humans are animals too some of the time. However, I am against the use and harm of decent animals for sales purposes.

Why in the world would a salesman or woman need to be proficient in the use of the instrument? Couldn't they pack a video for the presentations? Do the software engineers behind the programs being used in modern brain surgery have to learn how to perform sugery? Of course not, they simply have to be able to reasonably explain to Doctors how the programs work.

And while I understand that some animals are better than others--because they're more closely linked to humans--for some testing, doesn't this sound like something rats could have been used for rather than dogs? Then, she could have not only made her sales commissions, but helped Mayor Rudy with one of New York's biggest problems at the same time :)

Part of me says that what his wife did or didn't do has no bearing on Rudy's fitness to serve as POTUS. However, the animal lover in me is revolted by what I've heard, and I suspect that others may have the same gut revulsion. It's not good for Rudy.

It's almost impossible to get clean away from any type of "animal cruelty". If you wear makeup, take medication, or have surgery it's a HUGE chance an animal was used for a test in order to perfect some practice, procedure, or medicince.

SO WHAT Giuliani's wife used to work for a company that did that.

And this testing of a stapler may have saved hundreds of lives...childrens lives too not just adults. Kids that had terrible injuries and unless the doctors were able to practice on live tissue...people might get infections and die from complications. That's a real and serious matter. Some freaking dogs getting killed ain't gonna make me cry.

This story was orignally a NY Post article which in essence is a tabloid POS newspaper. Even NYers think it's junk...it's pretty much the worst selling local paper.

Like it or not, wives do play a big part in elections. Just look at when Edwards and his wife talked about her cancer and I'm still hearing ketchup jokes.
