Myself and many others, have been saying for a very long time that issue of middle eastern/Islamic terrorism goes well beyond a small group of people or a couple of organizations. There are deep rooted issues there that fuel the terrorism. They have a religion which is full of calls for violence, they have leaders which divert attention from pertinent issues and onto the "west" and the "jews" (and blame all their problems on the them) and finally you have a culture that just isn't as advanced as other parts of the world.
Here is a interesting video of a rather brave woman, it is both heartening and disheartening (because her voice seems so isolated):

To further underscore the typical and fundamental differences you see, here is a article I came across shortly afterwards on ESPN.Com about Iran banning women from soccer matches:

We need to stop giving Muslims religious zealots a free pass. I find it interesting, that Pat Robertson can come under a firestorm for making stupid comments, yet many people accepted the insanity coming from Muslims. Oh, they want to kill people over a cartoon. Well sure, I mean it was really insulting right? We have to "respect" their culture, we have to "respect" their religion yet they do not owe us the same service.
The fact of the matter is that the "war on terrorism" or the "war on the west" or however you view it is a clash of cultures. I said it before in relation to the Mohammed cartoons. It is a matter of which side you choose, do you value your rights? In a battle of ideals, we must not let our open-mindedness weaken our stance. We can not become tolerant of intolerance.
