View Full Version : What's your Age/Poli POV?

I figured it would be interesting to find out what kind of correlation (if any) exists here between users' ages and their poli prefs. This is incredibly non scientific, but if you want that, use the NES or GSS and run your ownstats analysis on it! ;) Check both your age group and general political "label". I chose 15-25 and Libertarian, as I'm in my early 20s and a voluntaryist. These labels are very broad, of course, so just pick the one that seems to work best, and qualify your answers in your post.

Um....you can only make one vote. This needs to be separated into two polls.

21, soon to be 22; liberal. It may be in part because I am young but I also think it is because my opinions closest match those of the democratic party.

31, and at this point in time, I rather easily qualify as liberal. That has a lot less to do with what I actually consider myself, though, and a lot more to do with how fucked up political arena is right now. (seriously, when did "we shouldn't invade countries on false pretenses and without a plan to deal with the aftermath" or "Its perfectly OK for the president to eavesdrop on anyone without a warrant at any time" or "Its just fine for the government to intrude on personal medical decisions" become liberal values? Yet here we are.)

Purrs,
Dangit I thought I had checked the "check boxes" option there? I remember it working for me last night though! It was pretty late, however.

Purrs,
You can vote for both age and party, but if you've already voted you can't vote again.

17 and liberal. I’m an extremist when it comes to social issues but more moderate when it comes to the economy.

How so, 5th? Personally, I believe that people should be free do do whatever they choose to, as long as they don't harm others and prevent them from having the same freedom. This means that I support maximum social and maximum economic freedom, as they are two sides of the same coin.

That is why i said more moderate for the economy. As long as it doesnt hurt people.

Interesting. I guess we have different definitions of things. The definition of "moderate" in this case would mean that you would more or less support the status quo of intervention in the economy. A lower % would be in favor of more regulation, and a higher % would be in favor of less regulation.

15 and I'm the future socialist of America. God help us, and hopefully you grow out of this line of thought. I'm 33, and conservative with Libertarian leanings as far as government goes, though not a Republican, because they have left the conservative path far behind them. I've noticed that quite a few of the Libs here are pretty young. I'm thinking a new poll asking how many are married and their political affiliation may be in order. I was a tad on the liberal side when I was young and single. Then I grew up and had a family. Your priorities change dramatically.

Craig, I hate to tell you this, but my 50th wedding anniversary is coming up this year, and I could fairly be classed as left-liberal. So, incidentally, are my mid-40s grandchildren. The more I read, the more I study, the more liberal I become. Oh, but I did cast my first vote for Eisenhower in 1956. By 1960, I was working as a JFK campaign volunteer.

my 50th wedding anniversary is coming up this year, Congrats, Buck! The more I read, the more I study, the more liberal I become. Alzheimer's? Just kidding! :D Oh, but I did cast my first vote for Eisenhower in 1956 Eisenhower was in a whole different class. How can you even compare this current crop of libs to him? Not even close. By 1960, I was working as a JFK campaign volunteer. Same with JFK. A whole different breed (though he and Slick Willie did have ONE thing in common:P) These guys were uniters, not dividers.

Cut the kid some slack. I think he does pretty darned good here for his age. At least he has a healthy interest in politics and isn't sitting vegging in front of the TV.
As for his political leaning......seems you've changed, I think it is only fair to think that he will change sides more than once, just as everyone does with age.

I just realized that I misrepresented myself in my previous post--my children are in their mid 40s. Five grandkids range in age from 3 to 14 years of age..
If Alzheimer's has had any effect on my political development, it must have set in very early. I think it's very likely the fact that I've been involved in many ways through my lifetime, as a campaign volunteer, civil rights worker, war on poverty worker, counselor to students wrestling with what to do about the VietNam war, candidate for political office, small businessman, party committee chair, etc.
I'm proud to report that my children are politically active as well, and that they are making sure their kids grow up poltically aware. It was a bit easier for my generation, because we remember the depression, and we grew up during the war.
So, while some DO become more conservative as they age, many who start and stay politically active, mature in a number of different directions. But for me to become rigidly conservative at this stage in my life (I'll be 72 next month) would be out of character and a true sign of senility.
