View Full Version : Democracy Forums IM?
I think it would be cool to have a forum IM. Thoughts?
Personally, I have no use for it. But that's just me.

Either that or/and a forum chatroom.
Aren't they one and the same? They are called different things but it still amounts to real time conversation, correct?

It's always mentioned on my many sites. Shoutboxes, chats, or IRC for a forums take away from the posting. Also with only 30-40 members daily posting...it's just not busy enough to have a chat.

They are slightly different. Chat is usually a free for all type of chat-room setting where many people are allowed to essentially talk/type at once. The instant messenger would be more of a one to one type communication.

I was on a site that had a shoutbox. Even though we only had maybe 20 active members, it was a fun way to just chat. It was dead sometimes, but lively others.
The website has since gone through some changes, including the dropping of the shoutbox. Personally I kind of miss it.

Gaahh! If we had a chatroom or IM I'd have trouble getting in here to post -- I think I'd be too tempted to go for a live debate.
But what might be cool is to set up some kind of scheduled chat and just create a Java room for that. You could only have it open twice a week or something, and that way blabbermouths and non-multitaskers like me can get here to post just as much.

When this was first brought up, I agreed with Labrocca that this site was just too small. Seeing the shout box used on other forums I can see how it doesn't detract from debates at all, just gives people that like that sort of thing a place to idle chit chat. It keeps the thread clear from that and gives the members a better chance to get to "know" each other. I'm still against a chat room, but I have to say I'm strongly for the shout box. I think not only will it keep us current, but it would give people that are checking out the forum a fast way to decide if they want to join.
Maybe we should vote on it?

Vote, vote, vote. Democracy now.
I'm all for a shoutbox.

Ok, a vote sounds good, but I have no idea what a shoutbox is! LOL!
I think that we should advertise this site. it would bring in a lot of people. Put it on google or something.
