Just because they don't want to help us in Iraq doesn't mean the UN is useless. For all of the frustration this administration has had with the UN, I don't think any of them have even considered or said anything about pulling out of the organization. I would like to call attention to Darfur, where the UN has done absolutely nothing. It needs much reform but to say we should get rid of it is absolutely insane.

If the UN were any good, they'd have found a way to turn the tide in Iraq and done something about Darfur, and would stop trying to disarm the world.

Get rid of it. They are one of the most corrupt organizations on the face of the earth.

It has always been my contention that the U.N. is broken and nothing in the recent past has changed that assessment.

There has to be a place where all nations can meet to duscuss the issues. And a body of world leaders who can work together to get things done.
I think the only reason many Americans don't like the UN is because it represents the world and not just our narcissistic bad selves.
Someone is always going to be more powerful than[/font] all the rest and try to dominate the world, and it's not always going to be us. Someday we may need that organization....then it'll just be wonderful....

Why? Iraq is our mess, not theirs.
And I believe there are UN peackeepers in Darfur...where are we? Kinda unfair to critisize someone for failing after trying when you haven't even tried.

My view on it is that an organization like the United Nations is needed in global politics. Nearly all countries are all tied together by it. Most of us take that for granted. If the UN is swept away then thousands of little wars, started by petty differences, will spring up all over the world. But like many have said the UN is not perfect and does need some major reforms just as many countries governments do, to get rid of bureaucracy and corruption.
If the UN were any good, they'd have found a way to turn the tide in Iraq and done something about Darfur, and would stop trying to disarm the world.
I'm not sure why you think the UN should turn the tide in Iraq for us. They were against us invading in the first place.

I love the United Nations. They give the illusion that the United States is willing to sit down at the table and listen. It's a beautiful thing that vastly amplifies American power, while requiring almost nothing in return. Sure, they eat up some $, but we couldn't buy the kind of bullying we do at the UN for 10 times that amount without the UN.
If the UN were any good, they'd have found a way to turn the tide in Iraq and done something about Darfur, and would stop trying to disarm the world.
Are you suggesting the UN be given the power to raise an army, invade countries, and depose governments? I don't think I follow you.

Actually I'm gonna rephrase my argument and give it to ya like this:
Iraq is our mess right now, so we need to clean it up, in spite of our troops being killed damn near everyday.
As for Darfur, that's not our mess, and that's where we need the UN to help out the people there by at least arming them, especially since they did little to nothing to help out Rwanda in 1994.

I voted no. We don't need yet another level of government- we need LESS! I would support a withdrawal of the US from the UN. This would pretty much take it down anyway, given that the United States has the biggest chunk of influence in that IO as it is. That said, I'm pro independence, but this issue doesn't keep me up at night or anything.

You are proposing that the UN be given the power to arm citizens in which to fight their government?
especially since they did little to nothing to help out Rwanda in 1994.
What should the United Nations have done?

I don't know about the UN, but here's one thing a private mutual fund is doing to address the Darfur situation: http://www.domini.com/GlobInvStd/Darfur-Cri/index.htm

Yes we should get rid of them....They are nothing but a bunch of corrupt pigs who are willing to go to any extreme to get what they want...99% of the time they get what they want through corruption.

I don't like the UN, but for different reasons than most.
I don't think it's realistic or practical to be in a treaty organization with nations that are cruel dictatorships or repressively authoritarian.
Being a member of the UN should be an honor reserved for those countries that follow international law, international trade rules and don't violate human rights.Â*Â*
(Oops, there goes our membership.)

Just for the simple fact that if we don't fund the UN it will most likely collapse makes me think it's worthless. If it can't stand without America as it's backer then what's the point?

Well if the Sudanese government is helping out to kill the people there, then yes. Level the playing field for the Darfuris.
What should the United Nations have done?
Step in and bring stability instead of let 800,000 people be slaughtered with machetes.

Other states didn't see the problem as a national security issue, micfrancklin. You've also got the treaty of westfailia norm of state sovereignty to deal with.
