Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.
Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).
In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.
The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.
Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.
Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.
Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.
“As the spokesman of choice for the global warming movement, Al Gore has to be willing to walk to walk, not just talk the talk, when it comes to home energy use,” said Tennessee Center for Policy Research President Drew Johnson.
In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

hypocrite?
What's a stoner who supports Bush, despite his drug policies?
Vice President Gore's office also wanted everyone to know:
100 percent of the power the Gores use in their home is green power.
Both the Vice President and Mrs Gore have home offices and conduct business at the house so obviously they use more power than someone who is just a homeowner.
The Gores drive a hybrid, use compact fluorescents, et cetera
And the Gores live a carbon neutral life which means that for every ton of carbon they emit, they also purchase offsets.

By yesterday morning Mr Gore's team was pulled into the controversy. Kalee
Kreider, his environmental adviser, told the Guardian that "you can attack
the messenger but the message remains the same". She said Mr Gore's fuel
bills failed to tell the whole picture. All the energy used for the
Nashville home came from a green power provider to the Tennessee Valley that
draws its energy from solar, wind-powered and methane gas supplies, among
other sources.
The Gores were installing solar panels on the roof of their home, Ms Kreider
added, and making efforts to reduce their energy needs. Besides, Mr Gore had
adopted a "carbon neutral" life whereby any emissions for which he was
personally responsible were offset by buying green credits such as parcels
of forests.

It's true. I do think he's a hypocrite in that, rather than leading by example, and giving endorsements and proposals for financial incentives for the private sector (ie, tax cuts for cleaner energy and less overall regulation, for example), he seems bent on "passing a law!", to everyone's detriment. Correct me if I'm wrong, though, as always.
On a related note, I would highlight Domini Social Investments (www.domini.com), which promotes socially just and environmentally friendly industries through a very large mutual fund. I have been with them for about a year. We need to vote with our dollars and reward our friends/punish our enemies with our peaceful economic choices rather than our violent governmental demands and expectations. Don't take my word for it, but I suggest the EuroPacific fund, which focuses on companies in Asia and Europe. You get a lot of diversity that way, both in terms of the industries, but also in terms of currency exposure. That's something to think about as the US Dollar continues to decline as the result of more inflation and more war.

Must be nice to purchase offsets. Kind of like when people used to pay for dispensation in the catholic church.
What's a stoner who supports Bush, despite his drug policies?
Probably a hypocrite as well. But does pointing out a bad behavior to justify another bad behavior change a thing? What Stoner smokes really doesnt have anything to do with whether or not Gore is a hypocrite.
Why do we never hear about the Bush Crawford estate? That place is alot more green friendly than Gore's place could ever hope to be.
The bottom line is that Gore's carbon footprint is HUGE, and he is trying to buy his way out of it with these silly 'offsets'.

Lets think about this for a second, what pollutes more... 100,000KW produced by coal or 100,000KW produced by solar and wind? If his energy is coming from solar and wind then his energy usage is really irrelevant. Its basic science Mitch. This story really shocked me at first but once I started searching and found the facts, it all fades away.

Bobby, the whole point is that Mr. Gore is asking us to, across the board reduce usage, while his usage is skyrocketing. It only fades away when you wish to give Mr. Gore a special set of circumstances under which to operate.

You completely missed the point. He is asking people to curtail power usage and his usage was 221,000 kilowatt-hours, 20 times the national average.

"The point about vice-president Gore is that he's devoted 30 years of his life to educating people about global warming. That says something about the man," she said.
That was my favorite quote in the guardian comeback. So for 30 years he has been involved in the "global warming" debate even though it's only been a debate for about 15 years. So 30 years ago was this about the same time he was inventing the internet? lol
Seriously I don't hamper anyones efforts to push energy conservation...global warming or not it simply makes sense to make less polutants and take advantage of new technologies. Also the politics around oil have become a problem in my view. Poor Al now has to scramble to put up som solar panels. That's a jackass imho to make a documentary about global warming and he doesn't even use solar panels which he could obviously afford.

As I said, Labrocca did your house have everything you wanted when you first moved into it? I don't see anything mentioning scrambling. Lily, you cannot obfuscate or bend this to make it fit. We are discussing raw kWh usage, not how much he spends, raw kilowatts per hour. The meter isn't turning faster because of the prices of his provider, it turns faster to register the kWh usage.
It is about usage. Gore, in a single home, used 221,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity - more than 20 times the national annual average, and at the same time requesting that everyone else cut back on usage.
Egads indeed! The spinning here certainly isn't just the wheel on Mr. Gore's meter.
What the hell difference does it make when he's not using electricity? I'm trying to find the article that read, the meter goes faster because it's not measuring electricity, but wind power, but I doubt you'd read it.

Alright, I understand where you are coming from. But you must understand that if hes using non-polluting energy, the energy he uses doesn't harm the environment or contribute to climate change. He isn't saying that we should cut our energy usage for the sake of cutting our energy usage. He is saying that we need to cut our emissions, which doesn't include solar and wind power. Obviously hes still using more than his fair share and should cut back, I just don't think calling him a hypocrite is justified.

Egads ECW, I guess it doesn't matter what Gore does or says. There have been people in this thread trying to redefine the way that a power meter works or claim that it doesn't measure kWh in Gore's case, there have been people who refuse to understand that using 20 times the national average power consumption while asking everyone else to cut back is hypocritical, and now this "I took the initiative in creating the Internet" hogwash.

Actually this is a true statement. In order to be good at defending our country against terrorist attacks you have to think like terrorists. You have to put yourself in their shoes and think like a terrorist and say to yourself, "Ok, if I was a tango how would I attack it. What targets would I hit. What's vulnerable?
In defending America, you have to think of every possible way to harm your country...come up with it before the terrorists do...and then take the proper precautions to prevent the real terrorists from harming us.

Is it that much of a stretch to assume that Gore meant asking the rest of us to make significant cuts in coal burning electricity versus say windpower and solar?
You'd have a point if he lived a squalid little hut like you and me but the guy lives in a mansion, pays his bill on time, and uses renewable energy that you and I don't use to heat/cool our homes.
I'm not denying the veracity of his power usage or the size of his bill, only the timing of the story. That would be an easy out wouldn't it? Except for the fact that wind and solar power are expensive and not broadly available. It doesn't matter what power source he is purchasing from as the power is pooled El. They don't come to your home and disconnect you from the power grid when you start paying the higher prices for green energy, you pay the higher rate and consume at your own will.
The FACT of the matter is that he is consuming 20 times the national average while asking the rest of us to cut back significantly.

I think there is some confusion in this thread about the difference of "energy conservation" vs "carbon footprint and pollutions that contribute to global warming".
Not everyone has the money to use an alternative energy source like Gore. Energy Conservation should be the FIRST step in reducing any global warming effect (if it's even real). So it's hypocritical of Gore not to conserve energy no matter HOW it's produced. He can afford to go and buy green credits and install solar power and run out and get an expensive power provider. Most of America doesn't have that luxury and when he was VP he didn't make anything any different.
It's great that Gore has his own comfort level that he isn't contributing to global warming. We all create our own justifications for what we do. However it's plain as day he isn't an energy conservationist which makes his whole global warming message sound empty.

Make no mistake Lab, I know exactly what the difference between carbon footprint and energy conservation is. I also know a few things about wind energy as I developed the network based CNC control system and PLC ladder logic for a wind-system company in Burkburnett TX way back in 1996 when they were still in business stateside.
Wind power is dumped into the grid, just like any other generated source. You don't get disconnected from the grid because you purchase green power, you take power off the grid just like everyone else, you simply pay more for that power based on a definition of source. That definition does NOT mean that you only use power generated by your green choice.
The only way wind power gets you off-grid is if you own the wind generator and use it as a private source, in which case you get the added benefit of being able to sell unused capacity back to the power company.
The whole point of this thread is the hypocrisy of Mr. Gore who uses 20 times the national average in kWh while asking normal stiffs like you and I to reduce our usage.

Same thing with her and the 5 day work week. She ranted and raved about how they were going to have a 5 day work week. Now look at them. They have done the opposite and are working less than before.
Hypocrites. All of them.

5. That energy hog is in no position to lecture any freak-in body!
6. While we watch him joke around on Oscar night, about announcing his bid for President.
7. All the while his seven homes or whatever are all burning the lights, and using enormous amounts of juice.
8. What a freak-in moron!
9. that's like claiming it dangerous to wall off cliffs, while you back over one!
10. Hehehehehehehehehe,......

Look at Nambla Pelosi.
Im old stoner........am I going to get some proof of this before I die?
Turns around and throws a temper tantrum because she doesn't like the size jet she has to fly in. So she carries on like a 3 year old until she gets her bigger jet.
She didn't even ask for the jet........he staff did. I don't know why we have to go over the same thing over and over. Tony Snow and Bush himself said she was right.
Same thing with her and the 5 day work week. She ranted and raved about how they were going to have a 5 day work week. Now look at them. They have done the opposite and are working less than before.
Other than the college football game, can you link me to any other days off?

Umm, so far they have worked more than the republican controlled congress of last year.
So far you still haven't proven the NAMBLA claim for Lily. Are you just gonna spout off typical Neo-Con propaganda like a good FreeRepublic member or are you actually gonna prove something?

Ironic how this all came out AFTER Gore won the Oscar.
Gore won an Oscar? Heck, I thought Davis Guggenheim's film "An Inconvenient Truth" won the Oscar. Gore was just the featured spokeshole.
Nambla Pelosi.
Prove it.

I think Pelosi is cool if she's making Congress work less rather than more. That means less time to pass laws it doesn't read (http://www.downsizedc.org/read_the_laws.shtml). Hell, I would even be OK with paying them NOT to come to work! 8-)
