AMES, Iowa - Newly minted presidential candidate Barack Obama delivered a tart smackdown yesterday to the Australian prime minister, who declared that Al Qaeda is rooting for Obama.

"I think it's flattering that one of George Bush's allies on the other side of the world started attacking me on the day after I announced," Obama said of the low blow from Down Under.

Prime Minister John Howard said Obama's plan to withdraw troops by March 2008 would play into terrorists' hands. "If I were running Al Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and be praying as many times as possible for a victory, not only for Obama but also for the Democrats," Howard said.

Obama noted that Australia has only 1,400 troops in Iraq.

"If he's ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest that he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them to Iraq. Otherwise it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric," Obama said. (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/story/496736p-418667c.html)

Typical rightwing Terrorist Sympathizer horseshit from an Aussie Neocon. Given that Mr Howard has hardly put his nation's fighting forces behind his craphead rhetoric, what would he expect Obama to do, thank him? Nope. Obama bitchslapped him for his stupidity and rightly so. Good job, man.

Obama has a point there.

Aye, this is one of those clear cut Bitch slaps. The Aussie PM really put his foot in his mouth there.

There are a lot of countries that SAY they support the U.S. mission in Iraq, yet they aren't sending any additional troops themselves. That speaks volumes on their "true support" of the mission.

Obama is clever. He said exactly the right things in reponse to being critized. He didn't blow-up and throw a fit. He simply said "Put-up, or shut-up"
A brilliant, charismatic, and witty speaker, I think Obama has what it takes to win votes from those still on the fence .

I liked it. He talks like a regular guy and he is so logical.

I'm about a third of the way into his book, The Audacity of Hope, and his writing is very like his speech. I like where he's going in the book, and will post additional comments about it as I move through it.

As to the Oz PM putting his oar into the US election process, that's a lot like the way the US has treated various Latin American countries. Nothing new to see here, folks, please move on!

Hmmmm.........now why does that rhetoric sound so familiar? It couldn't be because Howard's son Richard was working for the Bush campaign when they decided to throw it around the first time, could it? Guess originality isn't one of their strong suits (http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/10/13/1097607303684.html)

I thought this was kind of absurd. The PM of australia getting into a name calling match with a u.s. senator, and the PM starting it on top of that!

Crap! Stoned again! I guess you support Australia's additional 20,000 troops to help out in Iraq, huh? Or is that more empty rhetoric from the American version of the Howard camp?
